Vader lands in Cloud City
Happy Birthday to Leanne, who turned 25 *cough* *cough* on Sunday. She’s my best friend, you know. 🙂 It’s the final week to support 10 year old Star Wars fan Emily Feldman, who is about to undergo Brain Surgery in Boston. If you donate and leave the comment “Blue Milk Special” you will be emailed an exclusive Blue Milk Special strip starring Darth Vader and IG-88!
We’re introducing Lando Calrissian and Lobot just a little earlier than their first appearance in the film. That’s because, as you know, Vader arrived ahead of our heroes… in fact, taking into account the distances between stars, and the Falcon’s current lack of a hyperdrive, Vader could have spent decades, perhaps even hundreds of years waiting on Bespin for Solo and crew to arrive. It’s science! But we’ll ignore that since it’s just a movie and this is just a parody! You can see Lando’s second appearance in next week’s voting incentive strip.
The poll for favorite light saber is over, and the winner is… BLUE! Green came a close second, with Red falling way behind in third place. Purple was the most popular “write-in” vote, followed closely by orange and black! Come on, you would kill yourself using a black lightsaber in a dark room! I’m just saying common sense is important when using something as lethal as a lightsaber. 😉
Leanne and I would really like to know what you think is the best day for a webcomic (specifically Blue Milk Special) to update with the latest strip. We’ve done Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the past, but now that we can only update once a week, which day do you think works best for you as a reader? Let us know by voting, or leaving a comment. We love to hear from you.
Check out a Facebook webcomic that drew inspiration from BMS. It’s called MY BOSS IS A SITH. See the sample strip below.
Last week I introduced you to our friend (and BMS contributor) Kevin Con’s new comedy web series I HATE EARTH. A new episode will debut each week over the next few weeks. Check out the latest below and please share with your friends to help support Kevin’s comedy project. You can also *like* I HATE EARTH on Facebook.
Awesome as usual!
Happy birthday!
Love the Vader fistbump.
Happy birthday!
I think any weekday is a good time for an update. 🙂
I like monday; gives me something to look forward to in the new week. 🙂
And I love the ‘requesting freshly brewed coffee’ and fistbump!
(Also, Craft is a funny name for a shuttle). 😉
Am I missing the topwebcomics vote button somewhere?
It’s on the left menu below the strip. Just click on the image saying “vote to see next week’s strip!” 🙂
Oh… and thanks for voting! 🙂
Forcines help them if the coffee isn’t good!
LANDO. LOOKS. SUPER. AWESOME!!!!! (With Awesome Sauce)
Hey, wait a second, now I can’t be surprised to find out Vader arrived at BMS Cloud City before Han and Leia. 😉
Wouldn’t it be great if you could hypnotize yourself to forget your favorite books and movies so you could experience them again for the first time? Then again what if they sucked?
I still enjoy A New Hope and TESB when I watch them, so I know if I saw them for the first time NOW, I would be just as blown away as I was back then. To a lesser extent this also holds true for me about ROTJ.
Happy Birthday! I have to say that I love the books of S.W. For me it just keeps the adventure going. I always hate it when the movies end. This way it just keeps going. I know they’re not for everyone but for me it is great. For all those authors to write an adventure and try to keep the story going is amazing to me. When I had my last surgery it was those books that made my long stay in bed bearable. Actually with nine ruptured disks, three surgeries and hardware in me I can really relate to Darth. I always say I am his second cousin once removed.
I really like reading comments and emails like this, which contrast with my own view, but still make perfect sense. In this case, I think it’s simply a matter of taste. I feel the more writers and the more mediums beyond the original film, and original guiding vision of Lucas, the more removed and convoluted it becomes in terms of the qualities that first attracted me to Star Wars. However, of course it’s going to work for some, in fact many, who enjoy the ultimate direction the EU has taken things.
Someone could argue that perhaps I don’t love Star Wars as much, because if I did I would always want more. But I could also argue, perhaps I love Star Wars (the beginning, middle and end of the Original Trilogy) for what it was. Yes, I want to see more, but it has to stay true to a spirit and caliber that I perceive in those originals. It doesn’t make me right. It’s just my taste and the way I view it, but I can still relate to your own connection and attraction to the EU, particularly as you describe it so well. I don’t believe in absolutes and I don’t believe we can or should claim to know anything with absolute certainty in life, so I admit my own view of the world is simply my own and that there are many other ways of looking at things that I can or can not relate to. That’s why I like these sorts of comments.
Re: your nine ruptured discs… I have just one and that has done a real number on me and my hands and arms as a result. I hope you are managing the pain and that BMS continues to be a pleasant diversion (if brief) during your Mondays! 🙂
Thank you friend. With help from a LOT of meds, I do manage. I need more surgery but it won’t make me better. Might even make pain & nerve damage worse. So I am holding off until I don’t have a choice. I feel for anyone who has the problem. Just one as you say is way too many. You don’t realize how much it changes your way of living. Your back is the core. When it goes to pot as my dad used to say, it messes up everything. The way you walk, sit, lay, react, etc. In short, it ain’t fun.
This comic does indeed help. Thank you for that.
As for your way of thinking about the movies, I can see where you are coming from. I discovered the EU long after the movies. Before that I was as you are. Give me Trilogy or give me Death! But than I read one book. I was captivated. I am a ravenous reader. Everything from Plato to Star Wars. That one book, only hundred or so pages, changed my Star Wars life. No matter how good Lucas made the movies, it can’t come close to what is in our heads. Our imagination can turn a bunch of words into a movie that is beyond anything technology can ever do. Lucas tries. Bless him he does it well. But not well enough.
The books give you a different view. In ANH, you can hear what they are thinking, feeling, reacting to. It tells you things the movie don’t. I like that.
Plus, for all these different authors to create a story from seven movies….to try to keep the story arc on an even keel, they have to know the other books. To study every author, get to know the new characters so they can use them….no wonder it has inconsistencies. It would take a life time to write a book. I think they do pretty good as it is.
And for those who don’t like the EU…that is fine. I can see why. You are a purest. We need those. BMS would not be as good perhaps if you weren’t. Together, we share a love for Star Wars. That makes all of us a special family. The adventure continues.
May the Forciness guide your recovery.
Star Wars was just about dead to me when I found this comic and that, combined with bringing my kids into the fold as mini Star Wars Geeks, is what keeps the trilogy alive and well for me.
– I have pictures of them drinking blue milk, or fighting with lightsabres.
– They play with my RPG miniatures, and sometimes milk cartons, and say Boo to Jar Jar (yes I drilled that one into them).
– Now I find myself digging out my old figure collection and day dreaming of the day I will pass it on.
– They, even know BMS Vader as well as the movie one.
This is in some ways better then my own memories.
As for the expanded universe, the Special Editions, or the Prequels, to each their own.
I believe the adventure will continue until the end of days. It is just that good. A once in a lifetime chance that became a hit. I just don’t see another adventure having the impact Star Wars has. Close perhaps, but just not quite the same.
Thanks so much for all your help with Emily’s fundraiser! We are forever in your debt! May the Force be with you always!
You are welcome. Thank you to all our readers who gave their support. The Force is strong with Emily!
Happy Birthday, Leanne! (Since my birthday wishes are so ridiculously delayed, you can count them for your birthday next year)
In KotOR 2, I pretty much always made my lightsaber Orange or Silver… just because I could. Basically just any unconventional colour besides the common ones.
The first KotOR had rather more limited options, and since I ended up gathering inordinate amounts of Red and Purple crystals from all the dead Sith, my sabers usually ended up Purple too. Otherwise I went Gold, despite never playing a Sentinel. Was Guardian or nothing, just for being able to jump silly distances onto enemies.
Wasn’t until the last level of The Force Unleashed that I even encountered the notion of a Black Lightsaber. That game was kinda pandering to power-gamers and munchkins though, so I’m not surprised. And to be quite fair, Galen Marek with his final hooded outfit and black lightsaber looked pretty damned cool.
Honestly though, lightsaber colour doesn’t matter all that much.
Galen’s way of wielding the saber downhand appealed to me much more. But then I’d already been doing that with my Star Wars D20 character… who wielded two short-lightsabers downhand, and used uncoloured crystals because he believed fancy colours were a sign of vanity (and added impurity to the beam).
… I miss Produ. =( … He was a fun char to play.
The old WEG Star Wars RPG introduced the idea of a backup hyperdrive that would allow a ship to limp to the nearest system for repairs. The flight time was increased considerably, but at least it would get you there in your lifetime.
