Back to the old costume
We never see it happen on screen but, between Han’s torture and imprisonment, Leia ditches her Cloud City dress for her Hoth suit, sans sleeveless jacket. Blue Milk Special presents that moment, which we can only assume happened begrudgingly for the Alderaanian princess.
NEWS: Blue Milk Special to Parody Shadows of the Empire!
We have an announcement to make. Shadows of the Empire is coming to Blue Milk Special (or is it vice versa?).
Blue Milk Special will parody Shadows of the Empire between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The decision was made after running the above readers poll for the last month. The results are clear and the decision is settled. This was the largest poll response in recent memory, although we did leave the poll up for a while to accumulate votes. We’re still about three months away from concluding our parody of The Empire Strikes Back but, before Return of the Jedi debuts and we hit the home stretch, you can look forward to a short diversion.
For the benefit of our more mainstream readers, Shadows of the Empire was a sequel to The Empire Strikes Back, chronicling parallel events during the movie and events prior to Return of the Jedi. It follows, most importantly, the search for Han Solo / Boba Fett, but throws a green-skinned pheromone wielding villain into the mix. The story was told across various media, primarily the novel, video game and comic book series, and each covered different events meaning you would miss out if you didn’t pay up. Because the story does not exist in a single complete form, it is hard to sit down and enjoy it in a traditional way. Plus it has its drawbacks, like Prince Xisor, who I loathe. However, that should make parodying him all the more enjoyable. Just as we parodied the Star Wars Holiday Special and Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, Shadows will slot in neatly with the BMS art style and should meld nicely into the Original Trilogy adaptation so far.
I am not as fresh on Shadows of the Empire so I will welcome ideas and suggestions on trivia to consider for the BMS adaptation. Please email them directly to me as I don’t want potential spoilers in the blog comments thread. Comments with suggestions will be edited or deleted. Ideas that we do choose to develop will work better as a surprise though credit will be given where it is due.
So, there’s the big Friday news. Thank you to everyone who voted and commented on the poll. Your opinions were considered. On Monday we have some new BMS goodies to debut, so check back soon! Thanks for reading!
Hey, great that you bring Shadows of the Empire. I love this book.
Heh. I always wondered about Leia’s change of clothes. It didn’t really make sense that she would change clothes after she was taken a prisoner. Poor Leia. Now we know why she was so mad at Lando and didn’t believe him when he said he was on her side. 😉
Oh, Shadows! Look forward to it. Never played the game, so didn’t get that part of the story, but noticed how the comic mostly focused on Boba and the novel mostly on the heroes and Xizor. I wonder if there’s a good overview of this story arc on wookieepedia.
It’s been a while since I saw any of the movies, so I don’t even remember her changing clothes. But it makes perfect sense to me that she’d be kept in a gilded cage, and therefore maintain access to her clothes, or be given a chance to change if she requested it. And then she’d object to Lando’s arrangement by rejecting the fancy dress, and insist on dressing in her regular, less flattering clothes. Because if she’s going to be a prisoner she might as well dress like one. Or dress in clothes suitable for escaping.
So long as they’ve been washed! 😉
I know it’s waaaaaay off from now but, do you have any plans for after Jedi?
We may parody a handful of select scenes from the Prequels. But for now we remain non-committal.
I think Lobot took the dress back, on his own initiative, so he could wear it, and hook up with Breedo, for a romantic escape (literally to escape from the Empire).
The romance is probably more of Breedo’s idea. Some people (and Rodians) like bald men with headphones permanently attached.
You obviously know a lot about the Rodian psyche, Tom. I can definitely see that happening. I considered having Lobot wear the dress with a similar idea that he simply wanted it back from Leia for himself. But I think he has enough problems with Vader mistaking him for Picard right now. 😉
I don’t think anyone would mind if this was a strip or two… 😉
I wasn’t at all familiar with Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, nor was I familiar with the Holiday Special – at least, not until you included them in your strip.
I’m looking forward to Shadows of the Empire. Bring it on!
Great news on Shadows of the Empire.
No need to rush into Return of the Jedi. After all you said you don’t plan on doing the prequals so no need to rush forward.
This is so true. Delaying the end of BMS is never a bad thing… I hope it doesn’t technically end, like, ever. And while I understand not wanting to parody the entire prequels (what a nightmare that would be for them, eh?) you gotta admit it would probably be hilariously funny.
I missed the whole Shadows saga. I’ll probably pick up a copy at Jelly Bean used books. Yes, they totally repossessed that dress!
Shadows of the Empire was complete rubbish, so I’m glad you are going to take it down a few pegs! I have to admit I bought into it at the time, but later felt like I’d been taken for a fool.
It was my second and last attempt to read anything from the post Zhan EU.
However, pre Zahn EU stuff can be given a pass, like Splinter of the Minds Eye, Marvel Comics, since they can’t help but be campy…one I really want you to do the LP record “Rebel Mission to Ord Manetell”!!!!
I have that on Vinyl, it is awful! 🙂
Yeah, I listened to it in the car recently. Not much of a plot. Of course, I listened to a CD version. I don’t have a vinyl LP player in my car.
I have the vinyl too. I didn’t know it was avaialble on CD. I could get it transferred if I had the motivation. It is awful, that’s whats so good about it! Still, I mean, we’re comparing it to the Holiday Special, so….. awful is a very relative term. 😉
No LP player in your car? John Lennon had one back in the ’70s. He even had some kind of gyroscopic gimbals so it wouldn’t skip when he rolled over bumps in the road!
I read SotE back when it first came out. Wasn’t bad, though as an adult, I can see the contrasts between it and the trilogy it proceeded. I had heard the story was a litmus test for modern consumers to see if audiences were ready for a return to the galaxy far, far away. Guess it did well enough that we now have the “lesser” trilogy. Who knew.
Can’t wait to see how you deal with the ending of the Shadows of the Empire video game…never made sense to me why Dash did what he did…also love how they basically made you play as an almost Han Solo Clone in the game, which even as a kid I realized that was what Dash was. That or all really good smugglers are pretty similar.
