Mal Reynolds makes his second small cameo in Blue Milk Special, this time alongside his trusty ship, the Serenity. I know there are a ton of Firefly fans out there, so I hope this strikes the right chord. A special thank you to Geoffrey Padilla for providing the rendering of the Serenity that I needed for the strip. With a touch of mood lighting it was perfect! The idea for this strip was suggested by Fulongamer over a year ago. Yes… it’s taken a long time for us to work our way through the Empire Strikes Back parody, but at least the pace has been more manageable for Leanne and myself over the last few months. We cracked the top 10 at TopWebComics, we launched the podcast, and we have four translations, five if we count the Portuguese BMS translation about to debut. I don’t know if we’re keeping or building momentum, but there are definitely a few new faces among our core readers who come back twice a week to see what happens next. We’re very grateful to have your support!

I just want to say that any new purchases of Leanne’s Artbook Vol 2, or her Sketch Book 2012, along with sketch card commissions will more than likely arrive AFTER Christmas. The most recent batch were mailed on Saturday. If anyone has outstanding sketch cards, they are now in the mail. Fingers crossed they reach you safe and sound. Let us know if you suspect a problem.

This weekend we were in New York for Saturday Night Live and there was one special moment that occurred after we arrived. My Facebook post made minutes after sums it up: “Dave Grohl just grinned and squeezed my shoulder when we passed by on our way to the SNL writers room. I smiled at him and said “awesome! I hoped you would be here!” Wish I had a snapshot of that moment. Bring on the show! He looked so excited.”

I just assumed right away that him being there meant Sirvana would be playing. I smiled big and said what was on my mind in that moment, fully aware of his performance with the surviving members of Nirvana and Sir Paul McCartney at the 12/12/12 Concert for Sandy Relief. Leanne and I had talked about the possibility of Grohl & co making a cameo on Saturday Night Live given Paul was the musical guest. Leanne is a huge fan of both Nirvana and Paul McCartney, so it was a huge deal to encounter him backstage. Dave was so cool and seemed genuinely thrilled, like “you caught me!”.

Thinking about it afterwards, for all I knew at the time, he could have been there simply as a backstage guest like us. There were a ton of celebs there who made cameos in the night’s show, being a Holiday themed special. Martin Short, Larry David, Samuel L Jackson, Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks, Kristin Wig, Tina Fey, Krist Novaselic, Pat Smear etc. But we were right. On the program, lying beside us in the writers room, Paul McCartney’s new song with Nirvana, “Cut Me Some Slack” was on the list!

Dave was definitely laid back and genuine. Scott, our buddy who produces Weekend Update, told us how great Dave Gorhl has been at performing for fans and literally being helicoptered from one show to SNL for more and still be smiling. What sucks is I didn’t get a photo op with him later so I’ll just have to hang on to the memory of his huge grin and that pat and squeeze of my shoulder as Leanne and I walked by. Either no one else in our procession knew who he was or had the balls to say anything to him.

Later, just after the show ended and Paul McCartney was performing a couple of encore songs, we hurried past Grohl, Novaselic and Smear on our way to the studio floor. Wish we had taken a moment to stop and congratulate them then and there.

Blue Milk Special 2011 Group PinupAs recently mentioned, I am collecting Star Wars action figures and have a list I am willing to trade BMS prints and memorabilia for. Thank you to Neil, who has come through in a big way with 4 figures on my list. Below is an updated list of what I need. Unless otherwise noted, Power of the Force and Power of the Jedi figures are acceptable, however I am looking for the newer releases with their superior articulation wherever possible. Email me if you think you would like to trade.
