If you haven’t seen or heard of Star Wars: Revisited then you don’t know what you’re missing. Would you like to see the original Star Wars trilogy cleaned up, re-edited, with tighter scenes, brighter lightsaber duels, bigger space battles, and better special effects? I know, you’re probably thinking “but George Lucas gave us some of this already in his special editions”. Stop right there, because Star Wars fan, Adywan (responsible for the Star Wars: Revisited project) has one-upped Lucas. To find out how, check out the FaceBook page for the The Empire Strikes Back: Revisited which is currently underway.

My friends 9who is big on star wars) told me that that destroying woudn’t work anyways. Apparently the original Death Star took 24 hours to recharge between shots, the second one was something like 2 hours I belive.
Fortunately that isn’t common knowledge and is never explained in the film itself so it allows us to make fun of it. I’d like to see an explanation as to why it took the DS so long to orbit a planet when it only takes one of NASAs shuttles 90 minutes with our comparatively primitive space technology. Actually, I don’t want to see the answer because I don’t care. 😉 It’s all fantasy anyway.
Yavin is bigger than Earth, so it’s going to take more time to circle the planet.
Oh I understand that. But the trick is that we’re talking about technology that can build a moon-sized battle station that can travel in hyperspace. Even at sub-light speeds they should be able to get around to Yavin IV some way or another very quickly instead of the leisurely orbit. I was reading online that you have to orbit at a certain speed or you will not be able to maintain the orbit (and I’m presuming shoot off into space by breaking out of the orbit if going too fast). That is the only possible explanation I can think of to satisfy me, although I have to stress that I really don’t care about the science. This is a fantasy adventure movie and the real reason the DS takes so long to get around to Yavin IV is to built suspense and support the dramatic attack and Trench Run set pieces. But still, I think there’s enough there to poke light fun at the slow orbit. 🙂
given the size an presumably high mass of the DS, an orbit too close to the planet would put it within the roche limit, the point when tidal forces rip apart a sattelite. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roche_limit ) this would preclude the use of a closer, faster orbit. with something like the deathstar, the gravitational forces of other bodies in the system would play a big factor in plotting courses. even with sublight drives, the DS would have to be careful not to pass too close to anything. it’s also worth noting that since yavin is presented as a jupiter like planet, a normal orbit at the distance the DS was at would take several days to cross the distance the DS covered in a few hours. so it was apparently using a powered orbit.
The real question is why couldn’t they come out of hyperspace within range in the first place. No where else do we see a vessel exit hyperspace so unnecessarily far from its destination.
I’d have to reread the book, but if I’m remembering correctly, in the Death Star Novel, the initial test firing of the superlaser was done in a three part test at 1/3 power (or whatever, it took three tries at 1/3 power to destroy the planet) and it took only 30 minutes or something between shots.
See? I TOLD you Vader was trying to sabotage things! HA!
no, that one was an accident…you can see it on his “face”
the problem is in the details. Yavin is a GAS GIANT.
Speaking of Star Wars: Revisited, the scene with the lightsaber fight between Vader and Kenobi had a lot of bloopers that could easily be corrected with the digital technology today. Out of all the needless bullcrap changes (some I approved of) in the Special Editions, why didn’t they fix these kind of things.
P.S. A Death Star has terrible mileage and the thing is solar powered. There is your answer why it took so long to destory the Rebel base. ; )
“Star Wars: How it Should Have Ended.” Look it up on Youtube, very relevant to this.
Shoot the big Planet and let the moon get obliterated by continent sized shrapnel or loose all orbit and get shot into space and freeze to death
I thought the problem wasn’t that they weren’t orbiting Yavin, but they had dropped out of hyperspace behind it (like the Falcon did) while the moon was on the far side. Since they were traveling “in system” to be able to get around it and get a clear shot, I can see where that could take some time (the sub-light engines were probably pretty slow). And if they blew up the planet in front of them, I could see where that could cause other “clear shot” issues. *shrug*
If that is their only option, then the Death Star is a bit of a joke, isn’t it? If your weapon is so powerful, but also so slow and therefore vulnerable. I suppose they thought they Rebels just got lucky, which was why they probably decided to do it all over again in ROTJ. Let’s not even discuss the inanity shown by the Empire in ROTJ, trap or not.
Yavin is a Gas Giant much like Jupiter. It is a big ball of hydrogen. If they shoot it it would go up like a small nova taking out not only Yavin but most, if not all, of its moons in the process. Oh yeah, and the Death Star! You don’t want to go around shootin’ gas giants with a ray gun!
That’s why you keep your distance.
But don’t look like you’re trying to keep your distance.
It’s funny, but there are several decent explanations why blowing Yavin up would be a bad idea. 🙂 But I mostly think Tarkin liked the drama of targeting “THE” rebel base, and showing how awesome he and the Death Star were.
I think all three versions of the first trilogy have problems with them, the original, special edition and the revisited all have flaws in how they’re made, however nothing in the poor choices made with those or the prequels looks even fit to complain about after the last film they did this month. To the creators of this fine comic strip, you are a godsend you lot, because even when the humor is not too my taste you sure get this very very right! I laugh myself stupid at how good this is! From one fan to another, the force is truly with you right now!
