Dark Side exchange
For anyone who remembers Masters of the Universe. It was a cartoon that gave me a lot of comfort and happiness in my early childhood and one that Leanne would end up being involved in through the later comics. And before I get a torrent of questions asking why Guinan is on the Death Star… read BMS. Guinan is on the Death Star, disguised as one of the Emperor’s advisers as part of a witness protection program. I highly recommend reading our webcomic which has been going for 6.5 years with over 700 strips. I have just updated our Archive Page with links to the most recent chapters of the comic for those who don’t have as many strips to catch up on. Check out the Archive Page here.
The results for the poll on Marvel Comic’s Star Wars #1 are in. We had a total of 997 respondents. A whopping 79% of you either did not care about getting a copy, or had no idea about there being a new comic series! It’s pretty clear that although Blue Milk Special is a webcomic, most of our readers do not collect comics. But then, that’s pretty much a reflection of the state of the print comics industry anyway. Trust me, we’ve worked in it.
10% (108) of respondents liked or loved the first issue. 7% (64) of respondents felt ambivalent, disliked or hated it. 3% thought it was a decent beginning, and only 1% loved it so much that they bought multiple copies with the variant covers. What does this tell us? Basically, that the BMS readership who DO read comics, is probably a very small slice of our overall readers, and among those who do, enthusiasm for the comic is split. Having read the first issue myself, I have to say that I ended up cancelling it from my monthly pull list, along with Princess Leia and Darth Vader comics. I read the first few issues from each and while it isn’t bad, I would rather wait for a trade paperback, or just use my precious money on something else. Not a great vote of confidence from the public or myself.
Check out the new poll about whether you would support the BMS creators’ other projects.
If you want to keep ahead of the webcomic schedule and see the upcoming strips before everyone else, then don’t forget you can join my Patreon page. There are a lot of options for supporting my work and you can opt out whenever you like. Worth thinking about if you have time and a big help to me.
Well, that would be due to the dearth of female villains in Star Wars up until Episode VII…
I’m sure Dengar will be a valuable addition to Team Skeletor once his head and face injuries heal!
He-Man was always a “safe” show. Despite how bad things got, the baddies never win a battle. For a little kid like I was growing up back in the day, this was a favorite.
Out of curiosity I checked out the comics on wiki and in 2012 I has the shock of my life. It hour violent, (which I was happy with) but I wasn’t prepared for the twist in the final battle. I know most people hate spoilers so I don’t want to give it away, but its not your kids show anymore.
Well, you’re talking about comics, not cartoons. The comics have always had more of an edge, but even more so today which is a trend through all comics to try and grow with its audience. For me the best MOTU was the cartoon from the early 1980s. I had one guy pass our table at Awesome Con and, seeing Leanne’s MOTU artwork, mentioned what a crappy show it was. I resisted the urge to break his nose, although I did argue in its defense. It seems like a lot of people are unable to appreciate genuine kid’s shows, and expect everything to be gritty and edgy. I have zero problem with innocent kid shows. I like a wide-range of things. For example, I still enjoy the British puppet show Sooty, yet I’m also looking forward to Ash vs Evil Dead coming to Starz network later this year. Filmation’s MOTU might not have been for some, but it certainly DID have a magical quality that I find hard to believe is lost on some people. 🙂
All Hail Lord Skeletor!
Rightful King of Eternia!
Does this mean Skeletor has blueballs? *drum snap*
Dengar actually does sound like an eternean name. Maybe Dengar secretly escaped to the sw universe to begin with. I would also be highly suspicious of kenner’s hammer head, and walrus man, both clearly similar to the original naming style of mouth figures. ( such as ram man, moss man, beast man, and so on). Haha. The two universes could neatly tie together.
When I was a kid, my standards were based on the 3 3/4’inch figures. Any figures that were in scale, usually got played with together, I blended the droids from black hole, bsg, buck Rogers, into my r/c sand crawler. My cantina had the original five ( Greedo, snaggletooth, hammer head, walrus man, snaggletooth blue) but I added in boray, ovion, and cylon CDr from bsg, aliens from the memo Star Trek motion picture, ( rigellian, Klingon, beetleguisian) tiger man from buck Rogers, oh and the micronauts with the glow-brains.. My rebel fleet included mork in his egg ship, and the fisher price alpha probe. I was bms, before bms. Lol. And this doesn’t even mention my crystar and moltar figures.
One final note….never have I posted a note, that I had to fix more “auto corrections” in a single posting, than right now. My iPad clearly has a strong dislike for sci fi names. Lol.
Totally forgot to mention mixing in the old 3 3/4 figures of lizard woman, the blue beast man, and thun (lion man) from the animated Flash Gordon, gotta love the fact everyone made figures that were all that ” just right” size. In the a sense of having a true variety, later provided by those thorough guys at hasbro, we had to be creative and imaginative. This is what endears me to your strip. ( still holding my breath for that nanoo nanoo shouting cameo,)
The Star Wars universe (particularly the cantina) is the perfect place for all these diverse alien species to kick back and enjoy the blue milk. 🙂
I love the Filmation New Adventures of Flash Gordon. Wish I’d stuck Ming and Prince Barin somewhere in BMS.
Sigh, sadly it was only a short time later, a friend brought over a toy red lambourgini that he then seemingly split in half twisted about, tore open the door parts, flipped the chassis over-ended, and I beheld my first auto bot. My days of combing the discount shelves for new creature denizens came to a screeching halt.
Oh and in regards to the animated Ming and prince barrin, they would have been fun, but hey it’s never too late right? There’s always room for some hawk men…D-i-v-e!!!!!!!!!! ( queue the awesome battle music)
Yeah, there’s always room, but never enough time. 🙁
You know what BMS needs in the Endor part? Groot!
Lol groot on endor? Not the Knights who say “nee”? ( sorry, the Knights who formerly say “nee”, but who then currently say ” icky icky icky bop zing patwee woweee”. ( searching the forrests of endor for yet another shrubbery, a tall one.)
While I know the bms team already has a brilliant story planned, and would never try to predict what comes next, the groot idea made me laugh.
Well, I don’t want to give the impression that pop culture references is all BMS is any longer. The cameos in ROTJ at the Rebel Briefing and the Death Star Throne Room are actually part of story twist which is more than just a one strip gag. It’s actually going somewhere. Having said that, it is true some of our past cameos over the duration of BMS from the very beginning, have simply been one strip cameos. The reason I felt comfortable about taking this current twist was that when our parody of ROTJ is over, that could be the end of BMS. We will get to the scenes with Han and the heroes on the stolen shuttle, and the Endor scenes, and the space battle, and the lightsaber duel, but I feel simply rushing through only the movie scenes will just bring an end to the journey a lot more quickly. It would be like taking a plane flight to Los Angeles, when we’d rather drive. Sure, we might get lost and turned around in places, but we will have more adventures along the way.
I’m loathe to just start pandering to all requests. Evil-Lyn and Skeletor were an exception, but we had great fun illustrating them and finding a way to make it work. However, if I stick Jubal Early in for Firefly fans, and Groot for Guardians fans, then we might as well redefine BMS as a whole. I’d like to think that along with pop culture references, there are other layers to this comic that are valued by readers and that Star Wars never gets lost. What we do with the story should always be seen through the lens of the Star Wars universe.
Well said!
Actually I do read and (to some part) collect comics in print. Star Wars comics even, or at the least did so until they started publishing mostly reprints of not even that old comics. And I still hadn’t heard about the new Star Wars comics until I stumbled across the poll here.
Probably says something about how much clout the Star Wars franchise has left in the comicverse of Switzerland.
honestly i just burned out on buying comics and just look them up online now. I’ve looked at some of the Disney Star Wars comics and while they’re nice, it feels more like waiting for them in trade paperback now.
I’m not sure i answered the last poll. I tend to binge BMS about once a month as I fall behind on regular checking of the site. I was well aware of the Star Wars comics coming back to Marvel and new titles being released. I probably would have bought the first issue if it was not priced at $4.99. Subsequent issues are only $3.99 which is still a lot, but where most popular comics sit. I did not want to encourage Marvel and DC to raise comics prices once again by supporting a $5 comic book. It probably is a futile protest, but I felt compelled to stick to my guns on that issue.
Guinan’s probably there under the official cover name “Rita Miller.” 🙂
