General Veers
Okay, so here we are… back into The Empire Strikes Back again with our brand spanking new website, designed by Leanne Hannah and realized by Kieran Chapman. Kieran also put together Leanne’s own website which you should check out if you haven’t already. Speaking of Leanne, you’ll see a sketch of Biggs Darklighter on the right. She is currently posting several sketches per week on her Twitter account. Though not exclusively Star Wars, if you like sci-fi, superheroes, and retro stuff, then you’ll probably want to take a look, not least of all if you’re a fan of her style like I am.
There are various things to mention, but I’m in such a hurry to simply get this strip up that I’m going to leave those to a later update today or tonight. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the introduction of General Veers. You’ll be seeing him again very soon.
You can also see Leanne and myself (remember, my name is Rod, not Rob. That’s Rod for Roderick, not Robert. Think Hot Rod, but just don’t call me that to my face. That Autobot was responsible for the death of Optimus Prime, as far as I’m concerned!) at Baltimore Comic Con (August 20-21), just two weeks away!!! I know most of you won’t be able to be there, but if you can make it you will find us in Artist Alley at the end of one of the rows facing the signing area (bottom right hand corner of the convention floor plan). Leanne and I will be doing BMS sketches, and Leanne will be doing sketches of non-BMS subjects as well. Credit cards will be accepted, so don’t worry if you don’t have the cash. Please spread the word about the show and our Artist Alley table #175.

The Galactic Empire on Ice! 😀
Is the AT-ST in the last panel referring to one of those early Star Wars toy vehicles that were so small that you couldn’t fit the whole action figure inside it?
You got it! Although we thought our version of General Veers would be so enthusiastic towards the legged Imperial war machines that he’d refuse to move anywhere without one. Alternative Character interpretation aplenty at BMS. 🙂
HOORAY YOU ARE BACK!
Luke wishes they just fell over like that. Would have made his job much easier. 🙂
Veers’ eyes remind me of the cross-eyed navigator (or whatever he was) in Space Balls.
Asshole. He was recruited by his brother (or cousin, I dunno remember) who where also an Asshole. 4 or 5 more navigators/bridge personalle responded to the name. Lord helmet was, indeed, surrounded by Assholes…
Gunnery Sgt Axx-H*le! Heh, yeah, there is a slight resemblance.
I was thinking they looked more like Cookie Monster’s eyes, though.
(Not pictured: Biggs out the night before the invasion, setting out lawn sprinklers to ice up the plains, then swinging off . . . )
Yay! I will definitely make sure to visit you guys this year at Baltimore! I missed you last year, which was a huge disappointment.
BTW, Veers just became one of my favorite characters! XD
not only are you back but this is a CLASSIC strip : )
So much for the “All Terrain” part of their name.
Love it!
Why can’t AT-ATs walk in a straight line?
Because the General Veers. Badum cha.
Awesome strip- that top panel is priceless by itself.
LOL!
I’m glad to see the webcomic working again 😀 The AT-ATs are awesome LOL I’m the guy who are working in the Spanish translation and I have some ‘monkeys’ building the site at last. It’s only a matter of time.
I cannot wait to see it! You have done a great job so far ! 🙂
I never thought of it before – large, long-legged armored machines trudging across ice and snow. It does seem like low-profile vehicles with treads or (like Vader mentions) something that flies would have been more practical. Still, the snow battle on Hoth is quite awesome. 🙂
Ahhhh, so that explains it!
When I was younger, I accepted the concept of the AT-ATs marching toward the Hoth outpost without wondering why they didn’t use aircraft, which would have been faster and far more effective. Nor did I consider that metal against ice might not be the smartest idea for a transport vehicle.
You’ve explained the AT-AT assault on Hoth! Veers is a nut-burger. X D
As far as I know, no one has addressed this before… or explained it as Veer’s being a nutburger. LOL.
I always thought the shield made attack from space fighters impossible, and the cold made most speeders function poorly if at all.
That was why the rebels did not also use some fighter support, and needed to modify the speeders for HOTH.
Veers therefore (in my opinion) used exclusive ground forces because they were all he had that would be immediately available, and he had to attack as fast as possible.
I still like the Nut Job Veers though!
I’m not going to excuse it. I don’t think it’s sufficiently covered in the movie to make Imperial walkers any less bizarre. It was just the George Lucas “Rule of Cool”.
I just wonder how they got them down to the planet? I have this image of an ATAT holding on to the docking bay of the Star Destroyer like a cat clining to the side of a tub not wanting to get in the water!
That would be a great strip. Too bad we didn’t think of it! 😮
Betcha Leanne and Rod could come up with a “so, how *did* those big-ass AT-ATs get down there, anyway?” strip.
Yeah, “rule of cool” applies, but it applies so hard I’ll forgive it.
In one of the DH Infinities comics, the Imperial forces were able start the assault before the Rebels got their shield generator running, and were therefore able to attack the base with TIE fighters. So, a semi-retcon perhaps, but it makes sense.
At least there were no discussions about the disputes over the taxation of trade routes.
LOL. Yeah, that would be a low point for the OT if they had gone that route (trade route discussion, I mean!)
Re: boring “trade route discussion”s. Apparently there’s a good fan edit in which the dispute at the start of Phantom Menace is over Slavery Rights or something. A good device because Annakin could relate to it so well.
New comics, yay!!! <3 I can't wait to see what you do with the imperials in the ESB. Also Lando should be epic.
I do like this one. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a General Veers parody. Since he doesn’t die at the Battle of Hoth (as far as I know), he could easily make a reappearance.
Balt Con? D’oh! I’m going to NY Comic Con! It’s like we’re running parallel streets! Oh well. Maybe next time.
Actually, Veers was intended to die, but his death was either never filmed or deleted from the final cut. His death is even storyboarded, although you’ll have to surf the net to find the images as they aren’t included in the following link: http://www.starwarsholidayspecial.com/swcs/episode5/Veers.html
Gotcha; thanks for the heads up. Perhaps it’s good he died then, as it’s wise to thin out the weak genetics strains to make room for theoretically stronger blood lines.
Awesome new site!
FANTASTIC expression on General Veer’s face!
Thank God your back, I was beginning to get withdrawal symptoms.
Thank you! This strip will be a classic. Excellent.
I’m also admiring the thick brushed linework on the top panel.
I always liked the AT-AT scene. They always reminded me of big lumbering dogs, and your interpretation just enforces that.
