Han Solo’s Priorities
It’s fun to once again be parodying a Star Wars movie scene by scene. Back when we started with A New Hope readers were able to follow along with total familiarity and expectation of what would be right around the corner. You’d see Leia being interrogated by Vader on the rebel ship, then you’d see C3PO and R2D2 marooned in a desert, but we’d throw in the added twists of including deleted scenes like Biggs at Anchorhead and insert some of our own randomness now and then. Once again, with The Empire Strikes Back now well underway, we are following a classic movie and doing our best to share what makes Leanne and myself laugh when WE watch the films and go off on our tangents.
Something that flew by, which we completely missed, was Blue Milk Special’s SECOND ANNIVERSARY. We started in Feburary 2009. Things have been a bit chaotic here at BMS HQ. More on that shortly. The result was that we just didn’t have the time to stop and mark our little milestone. Here’s hoping that in a year’s time we are still producing strips and are well into Return of the Jedi. You guys help make that happen by reading, commenting, and giving us a reason to keep sharing this weird parallel cartoon adventure with the world.
Looking at the last four strips since Luke got hit off his Tauntaun, I’m kind of proud of the way the Echo Base strips are working out visually. Maybe I’m just a sucker for the color blue? Props need to go to Ralph MacQuarrie for the Hoth background in the last couple of strips and the help of Geoffrey Padilla’s 3D renders embellished by yours truly.
Unfortunately my Dad’s been in the hospital for a number of surgeries and I’m busy looking for work. These real life things have an impact on the strip, although I don’t anticipate us missing our current twice weekly updates on Mondays and Fridays unless things get worse. :-/
Thanks to those of you who contacted me with suggestions for places I could apply for work. I really appreciate you caring and taking the time to try and help me out. You are my Star Wars family! 🙂
My situation is not great (I am under-emphasizing greatly). I would like to ask again if anyone has any suggestions? I have not completed my degree–I married and moved FROM NZ interrupting the whole process–so that’s part of the criteria that needs to be factored into consideration.
I’m looking for anything creative. You have a movie you’re making and need a guy to get things done, I’m your man. You have a game you’re working on and need a writer? I’m your man. Creative writing? Entertaining children? Photoshop retouching and wizardry? Graphic design? If you have any contacts, please let me know. 🙂
Hi Rod, another good strip today!
Sorry you’re struggling with so many pressures at present and I especially hope your dad gets well. If I could hire you myself – I would.
I’m out of league here. Too much brain power on dpilasy!
Yeah sorry to hear about your recent strain of not-so-goodness. BMS is as good as ever though, thank you.
Here’s hoping things get better for you and yours soon. ^_^
Sadly, creative work doesn’t always pay as well as regular mundane work. I’m doing a troglodyte job (administrative assistant in an accounting department for a major healthcare company) so I can pay my bills and still do “fun work” on the side. It’s not easy some days – compromising for crumb and crust – but you generally don’t even need a 4-year degree to do it, and you can at least get benefits. Or that’s how it works in Minnesota.
I have a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, but I make more as an admin than I would in my field of choice.
I know. Right now I’m making a lot of money doing something I hate. I would rather spend these valuable years of my life doing something I love and something I know I have knack for, regardless of the pay (within reason). Not having a completed degree is something that has prevented my application for many jobs so far. I know the right job is out there somewhere, I’m just trying to cast a wide net to find it.
A shame there’s no “high”(er) value on comics and cartoons, since the market is so big and that nowadays, almost “anyone” can make one with “minimun” (matters on what you compare with, those who drwe the very first comics ever made where on the level of pre-gutenberg bookbinding as far as i know) effort. And that hand-made art is coming back in circles doesn’t help either for everyone who edits cartoons on a computer or, usually, several…
And, with you’re dad, I can at least say that my grandfather have had several injuries and surgeries beyond countable times, and he still keeps going, even though he always have had a potruding belly from gramma’s good cooking. BTW, where you two living in the UK or US (embarrassing to admit, but I never checked on your background really ^^;)? I don’t really remember the status of British medical and healthcare, but I’m cheering for Obama. We Sweeds have always had that kind of healthcare, and it earned us a plac eon the top-10 healthiest countries in the world (I think the highest we ever climed o nthose statistics where 7th, but I don’t think we’ve ever dropped below 27th-28th). Anyhow, as long as you’re dad got the will, there’s always a way by modern standards!
We live south of Washington DC, USA. I typoed in today’s blog and corrected it. I moved FROM NZ not, TO NZ. I am an idiot.
In NZ (where my dad lives) it’s public health care. Sweden and NZ aren’t that dissimilar really. 🙂
3PO’s line in panel 3 is particularly funny if you hear it said with Anthony Daniels’ clipped, proper English delivery. X D
Sounds like you’ve got a full plate of some very unpleasant things going on. Lots of positive juju from me to you, for what it’s worth, and hopefully, things will get better sooner rather than later. I, too, am working outside my chosen field (as you know, opera singer) to make ends meet. I make decent money, but I’d rather be performing, so you have my sympathy.
Everyone loves A. Daniels!
And, positive juju, maybe, but still
BAD MOJO, MON! @_@
Best wishes with your father’s well being, as well as your employment opportunities. I only have one idea, and I’m emailing them to see if it’s plausible. Heaven knows I’m eager to get a job in a field I enjoy, so I feel your pain.
Wish I could be of help but, job-wise, I’m not in much of a better boat right now.
As for the strip, I’m sure men the world over would do much stupederer things to sleep with a hot princess.
I’m lucky if I remember to put the seat back down, so I’m grateful for the one I caught.
Good vibes being sent through the ether, Rod.
3PO is a cheeky sod, ain’t he?
Too funny, and yet I can’t help thinking 3PO is just the wrong person to be giving relationship advice of any sort…
Congrats on the comic anniversary, 2 years is a significant amount of time. Sorry to hear things aren’t going so well otherwise, though. I can definitely sympathize with the job part at least. Hope things improve for you soon!
Congrats on the 2 year anniversary! Here’s to many more. =) Can’t wait to see the AT-AT’s in this strip.
Grumpy Grammer Anal-ysis: “Two Year Anniversary” though common in today’s parlance is grammatically redundant. “Anniversary” by definition means “yearly.” The grammatically correct phrase is “Second Anniversary.” 😛
Happy Anniversary, BTW! I’m glad I found this comic. I’ve been here a little less than a year, myself.
Thanks! I have corrected it. Late night post! 🙂
Sorry to hear about your father.
Han looking for Luke just to score points with Leia fits perfectly with Han shooting first. It’s almost too true to be funny. Almost.
This one really cracked me up. This is a side to C-3P0 that I’ve never seen. He’s actually being useful to Han. ^_^
I’ve been reading for a while and this is my first post. My hubby is thinking about making some iPhone apps as a side gig and needs an artist and eventually a graphic designer (if we eventually start an ‘offical’ business). The best we could do right now is give you a cut of the profits (if any). Well, email if interested, and good luck regardless! PS. Do you guys take donations? I know some webcomics do that. Peace =^.^=
Hey, Rod. Noticed the falcon was but a background in this strip, not an illustration/model. What’s with that? It’s simple curiosity, not criticism.
Didn’t have time to get Geoffrey to supply that angle of the Falcon. 🙁 Might Special Edition it in soon. 😉
Happy Anniversary BMS, looking forwards to many more years.
Sorry to hear about your Dad, hope he is ok. Can’t help on the job front either, soz.
I’m really sorry to hear about your dad, Rod!! I’ll keep him and you and Leann in my thoughts, so good luck!
And ever since you started Empire, I keep rewatching it and I can totally envision all this stuff in between the lines, ha. I can’t wait for more 🙂
This strip reminds me of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxW_ZCd64tg
