Do you want to know more?
We have reached that momentous scene where Vader reveals his identity to Luke.
It was something that Vader was made aware of as early as the Story of the Faithful Wookiee animated segment form the Star Wars Holiday Special, where Boba Fett revealed to Vader that he had captured a rebel named Luke Skywalker. That had to ring alarm bells in Vader’s helmet. So when they met during Splinter of the Minds Eye, we presumed Vader knew by now, but was keeping that knowledge close to his chest. Finally, after all that searching for the perfect moment stuff, he chops off Luke’s hand and realizes, it’s now or never. What a touching scene… well not really. Just like a dad to rub it in and always seek to embarrass his son!
Love that you threw in the misquote version of this scene
?
It was never “Luke, I am your father.” It’s “No, I am your father.”
You know we paraphrase all the time, right? That’s vital for the limitation of 4 panels. If we started with “no. I am your father.” Then the strip would feel like it was missing a beginning.
I’m just pointing out/clarifying what Schutzenegger is saying. Your “?” seemed like you were confused or didn’t understand his meaning.
The response is directed at Shutzenegger, but also to anyone else that has a problem with us tweaking the dialogue — something we’ve done since the beginning because that’s why it’s a parody. π
Most people tend to misquote the line as “Luke, I am your father” when the correct line is “No. *I* am your father.” That’s probably what Schutz means.
cheers,
Phil
The Warner Bros cartoons with sylvester and son-boy come to mind. Son-boy’s frequent “oooh! Faaaaatheeeerr!”
Son-boy, reading: “In order to be a real cat, you must chase birds… catch birds… and gulp… EAT birds… Oh, father, what are we? Cannibals?”
Sylvester, rubbing hands, “Yeahhh..heheheheheheheheh.”
That’s also like saying that Obi Wan Kenobi never said “May the Force be with you.” It was Han Solo.
Although Obi Wan DID say: “The Force will be with you. Always.”
This reply is to people complaining about changes to the dialogue. Here’s the actual film script.
VADER: No. I am your father.
Shocked, Luke looks at Vader in utter disbelief.
LUKE: No. No. That’s not true! That’s impossible!
VADER: Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
LUKE: No! No! No!
So you can see we also tweaked Luke’s dialogue. Funny we got no complaints about that? You see, we’re not the films. We’re a parody. It’s that simple. Almost every strip we take liberties with the dialogue for it to work in the 4 panel context, or for humor’s sake. I think from now on I will cease to reply to comments. I love you guys, but I need to be able to step back and not get bogged down by minutiae.
DAMN YOOOOOOOO!
I’m not paying for this anymore!
; )
Not a complaint on my end, man. I love your work. Keep it up and keep it the the way you make it.
This got mention because it is a famous misquote. No one judging your take on the dialogue. If you google “famous movie misquotes” you’ll come across heaps of list starring “Luke I am your father”. It is a thing.
“I got it on with your mom.” Such an awesome T-shirt/tattoo worthy line.
Hahaha! Oh, Vader. He could use a diplomacy lesson or two. π
Wonder if Luke will rethink adding him on facebook now.
Ewww! That’s an image you don’t want to have before going to bed at night! π
Yes! Yes yes yes! Been waiting for this since I started reading the comic. I just knew you guys would do it up right. π
(more like do HER up right AMIRITE HAW HAW HAW)
cheers,
Phil
My kids all have a similar reaction when I remind them, I’m the dad… π
“he chops off Lukeβs hand and realizes, itβs now or never.” lol
What a touching family moment. His next advice should be “Just walk it off, son, it’s not that bad.”
This is one of my hubby’s favorite scenes since our twins are named Luke and Leia. Very funny strip today.
That’s something I’d never want to hear from James Earl Jones, in movies or real life.
Great comic, but… I miss the Star Trek mug! I think it would fit in perfectly in this scene. ^^
Well, you know, it could be an alternative sequel?

Brilliant!
And…wow! An interview and… “the #1 Star Wars comic on the web”. I’m so happy for you two π
Given everything Vader went through, chopping off Luke’s hand would be a legitimate bonding experience, a right of passage towards becoming a killer cyborg just like dad!
It’s started. Lucasfilm will shortly not be something that families can watch together. Thanks a lot, George…
Don’t forget the cantina arm-chopping. George was going to have a be-heading instead!
I was shocked even at the dismembered arm when I was 9 in ’77.
But… I do take your point. Slicing someone’s legs and arm off and watching them burn alive isn’t suitable for kids.
When I first saw Star Wars ESB as a little kid (I didn’t see ANH first), I was like: “How can Vader be Luke’s father? Isn’t he a droid?”
Third time reading this strip & I just noticed the exclamation point above Luke’s head in panel 3. Vader’s “Yep.” dialogue makes perfect sense now. Talk about rubbing some lemon over a raw wound. Lol
I should probably put those surprise exclamations in speech balloons from now on. Thanks for mentioning that.
Blue Milk, some of us would say, they way it is on the cartoon is correct. And the saying we all grew up with. After like 2008 it seems like it suddenly changed to “No…I am your father” What’s up with that….
