Death Star Rumors
Blue Milk Special in other languages…
A quick explanation for those reading BMS in chronological order. Peter Cushing only wore officer boots in one shot from the movie, for the rest of the film he had George Lucas agree to shoot him from the waist up so that he could wear slippers. The reason for this is that Mr. Cushing had very large feet and the costuming department, for whatever reason, was unable to deliver suitably-sized boots. From this little anecdote the Blue Milk Special Grand Moff Tarkin was born.
Is Motti starting to notice things the rest of the command staff already know? On a superficial surface glance Motti is just an outspoken, high-flying career man who does not know his place in the company of Lord Vader. But, as with all things, there is no such thing as black and white. Motti is in fact one of Tarkin’s greatest admirers. Tarkin married his cousin and whether by default or through genuine talent, Motti earned Tarkin’s favor within the Empire. It turns out that Tarkin had a lot of enemies, Colonel Yularen is one of them, pictured with the mustache and white uniform. Tarkin had at least contemplated using the Death Star to wrest control of the Empire from the Emperor (re: Dark Empire trilogy). This meant that Yularen, as a loyal spy of the Emperor was a constant threat to Tarkin and his most fiercely loyal officer, General Motti.
Motti’s apparently foolish challenge to Lord Vader resulted from an obvious growing sense of confidence that the Death Star (Tarkin’s concept and baby) gave to his own position of power and the power of science to provide a weapon against which even the Emperor could not withstand. Despite Lord Vader’s claims, a quick “Force block” hand wave is not going to stop the Death Star superlaser from atomizing him down to his midichlorians.
And there’s another point. Motti appears to be something of an Atheist, IF we can consider the Force and belief in it to equal a form of religion. It is certainly a form of spiritualism and the Jedi’s have parallels to both the warrior monks and the samurai. So, Motti is also standing up for his views and belief in science over faith alone. Where am I going with this? I’m not saying that Motti isn’t a cock. He clearly is. However, he has some interesting qualities that make the analysis of his actions rewarding (if you’re a huge geek).
Basically, I used to hate Motti. He was that sneering bastard-type villain who you just wanted to see get his neck wrung. But, now, as a huge Tarkin fan, I can’t help but appreciate one of the only onscreen allies Tarkin truly ever had. And the irony is that Tarkin was being less than faithful to Motti’s cousin. Anyway, the dude isn’t quite convinced that Tarkin is screwing Daala just yet. Will he find out? What will he do? Will he tell Lady Tarkin? Do you care? I hope so, because we absolutely love these characters!

“I’m not saying that Motti isn’t a cock.”
Ha ha haaaa!
Hee hee! May the Fuzz(y bunny slippers) be with you!!
Judging by the final panel, Motti knows that Tarkin wears slippers, but never boots, so clearly those boots must belong to someone else? Otherwise I don’t see what would be so strange about seeing Tarkin’s slippers outside his own door, assuming that the sign really does say “Grand Moff Suite”.
Yep, those are Daala’s boots, hence the context of the conversation.
the fun thing is that the “new” animated clone wars tv serie/film shows Yularen as “admiral Wulf Yularen” AND he was the admiral of the 501’st legions fleet, which Anakin Skywalker was in charge of. Yularen shows to dislike Anakins rough and dis-obeying tactics (like oni did). the question i want answered is how did yularens relation with ani go when he became vader…
LOL the bunny slippers tell all.
In panel 2 you have Yularen saying “Taggi”….sounds like a power couple name for Tagge and Motti 😉
Check the film credits, Dex. We go by the original canon! No, seriously. This was a conscious decision as the discrepancies and confusions between the names AND whether the characters were army or navy were addressed in another strip. http://www.bluemilkspecial.com/?p=109
Since we love the films first and foremost we decided they were the be all and end all when it came to trivia conflicts like this.
typo alert. you spelled empire “empier” in the second paragraph
Thanks. Just a warning, you will no doubt find many typos on your journey through these blogs. 🙂
