What’s this? Blue Milk Special is going daily? Yeah, if you missed it, here’s the Monday strip. For the next four weeks Blue Milk Special will be updating five times a week + 3 Tarkin flashback strips. That’s 8 strips a week. Are we crazy? Not really. We have built up such a big buffer that we need to unload on the readers, particularly during this experimental interquel period. We hope to begin the Boba Fett cartoon parody by mid May and then onto the Holiday Special by mid-June. That should put The Empire Strikes Back somewhere in August. If we didn’t speed things up a bit then we’d be looking at a September or later start for TESB just because of the wealth of Expanded Universe material, and our own original tangents.
Today’s strip was inspired by the Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson Star Wars newspaper strip story “The Night Beast”, reprinted and colorized by Dark Horse Comics in issue #8 of Classic Star Wars (1993). The specific scene is Leia dancing with her escort, General Jan Dodonna, who she chose over both Luke and Han despite their best efforts. She did assure them it was purely a formality, but the mind does wander if you happen to be as twisted as BMS. Note the conspicuous and spontaneous appearance of female rebels. Also note that this is some 10+ adventures and 15 or so issues into the Newspaper reprints and they are STILL on Yavin IV. Why they were able to remain there so long when the Empire was aware of their location only George Lucas knows. Who am I kidding? He didn’t even proof these. Here is the scene.

Thats GREAT news, now i have something to look forward to everyday after school.
A new strip each day, excellent!
A celebration after the destruction of the Death Star?? What – like the Empire wasn’t going to load up a few Star Destroyers and beat a path to Yavin IV? I’ve never been in the military, but even I could tell you that throwing a party after blowing up the Empire’s nasty new toy is a Really Really Bad Idea.
Rebels? Yeah, you-all in the fancy gowns and the nice, neat uniforms – GTFO!!!
Looking forward to more Blue Milk in my diet this week! X )
The crazy thing is that this particular party is not celebrating the destruction of the Death Star, but whatever recent Rebel success had just occured by issue #9 of the second volume of Classic Star Wars newspaper strips. We’re talking at least a couple of weeks, but most likely several months after the Death Star went pop. I guess Russ Manning and Archie Goodwin figured the Empire consisted mostly of the people aboard the Death Star at the time of the explosion. Still, it’s one of those things I felt needed some sort of common sense comment from BMS. Plus Dodonna touching Leia’s ass is going to have repercussions in our continuity. 😉
Lucky for me that I decided to go through the archive again ^^ Since I started reading this I check this side every day but I don’t remember this one. Weird 😛
Great story 😀
I hadn’t noticed it before, but now that you mention it there was (aside from Leia) a conspicuous lack of female rebels. I guess they were all out recruiting young men with a weakness for pretty faces. 😉
Well. They did blow up everyone who knew where the base was. Except Vader, and his fate was unknown (and untouchable by the comics according to Lucasfilm.) So why not leave them on the base they just defended and saved? Looking back, after seeing them move to Hoth, it seems obvious, but in the period after the first film it wasn’t so much.
