Savage Science
Watching the Klingons in Star Trek, particularly the re-imagined Klingons from the 1980s onwards, did make me wonder just how convincing it was that they had a civilization possessing advanced technology. And despite all their “talk” about honor, Worf is one of the very few that demonstrates having any. Being that quick-tempered and violent isn’t too far off from humans, but it’s rare we ever see a Klingon who sits at home working on Calculus D and Quantum Physics. Never, is probably the word I should have used. Even less convincing are the Predators from the sci-fi action film franchise and comics. Are we to honestly believe they have a starship manufacturing industry? They don’t even look like the kind of aliens who would use toilet paper, and we all know that toilet paper is the true indicator of high civilization.
Postscript: Leanne says she can’t see Klingon’s using it either.
Ever read a webcomic that is quite like Blue Milk Special? Where else can you find a flying Stormtrooper, a Biggs Darklighter that refuses to die, and a Jawa giggolo? All sci-fi universes are fair game as we mix-it-up and parody the Star Wars trilogy one scene at a time.
I’m Rod Hannah, author and co-artist of Blue Milk Special, along with my wife Leanne Hannah, we have a developed a distinctive “noseless” art style for our full color cartoon strip. It’s 100% free to read online and is not published in print anywhere.
We need a new website for our 700+ strips. After 6 years of working with ComcPress, we are being forced to upgrade and import our huge archive of strips and blogs to ComicEasel. In the process many hours of work are required to make sure everything crosses over successfully and any bugs are worked out. The longer we delay, the more fragile our current website becomes due to security issues with WordPress / ComicPress.
While we have recovered our website and stabilized the situation, we have to prepare to make the transition to a new site that is powered by a theme which is actively being developed and supported.
This has always been a fan project, not a commercial one. Which means that all expenses over the years have always been paid out of our own pocket. However, in the last year, due to circumstances surrounding my health, BMS has only been able to continue with the financial support of our readers. That’s why we need to raise the funds for the new website which is crucial for BMS to be able to continue beyond December of this year.
If you can spare $5 dollars or more over the next few months as we try to hit our goal, we should get there before we know it. While we can’t sell you BMS in print, we can keep the 700+ strips online and continue to add more if we have you guys behind us. That’s why I’m starting this campaign now.
Can we reach $1000 by December?
Can you help spread the word with us?
If we can’t reach the goal then BMS is heading to the dustbin of history because I can’t afford it on my own. Hopefully, as a community of fans, we can all make an investment in the future of this webcomic.
Please, only donate what you can manage. There are some extremey generous and amazing people out there, but I don’t want anyone mortgaging their house, or upsetting their spouse! Let’s spread the word. The more small donations from a wider number of people and the more certain we can be of reaching that goal without anyone carrying too large a piece of the burden.
We’re counting on the Forciness of our fandom.

While I did find the ‘new’ Klingons cooler than the greasy-skinned proto-Mongols of Classic Trek, I have to agree that the story/continuity folks sorta painted themselves into a corner with the Vers 2.0 Klingons. “RAARH” smash – kill types don’t make credible Einstein characters. :p
The simple solution: subject (re-slave) races within the Klingon Empire + a boat-load of handwavium :p The canon solution: ‘thoughtful’ Klingons.
Yeah… sorry, the latter never quite worked for me. OTOH, having female Klingons as the thinkers/scientist caste? I could have lived with that.
Have you ever thought about putting out trade paperbacks of each movie parody you’ve done so far? And, after you are done all 6 movies + the Splinter Of The Mind’s Eye parody + the SotE parody you could create one complete trade paperback.
I know I’d buy them. It’s so much easier and better (for me, at least) to grab the book from the shelf and read them all at once. As opposed to having to log on and scroll through them all online.
BMS would need licensing rights to sell anything connected with Star Wars. That license is expensive. Plus, Disney probably wouldn’t approve of the parodies, and would deny the request.
So, BMS can’t sell books.
I believe that they did establish that the Klingons have scientists and manufacturers. The Klingons we most see are the Warrior/Ruling Caste. Various Castes are below that. It is possible for a member of the lower Castes to rise to become part of the Warrior Caste (Martok being an example), but that is incredibly rare.
I always figures that, at least the predators, had stolen the bulk of their technology off of some dumb-ass who landed a starship on their planet.
As for the Klingons, they seem to have intellectuals, but I doubt that winning a Klingon Spelling bee will win you as much respect as a bat’leth contest.
According to canon, that’s EXACTLY what they did.
The Thing from “The Thing” was a gooey, quivering, mass of tendrils and throbbing flesh, but it was a gooey, quivering, mass of tendrils and throbbing flesh that knew how to build a spaceship from parts found at a human research base in Antarctica! It did have Wilfred Brimley’s glasses…
Good point. Although the key thing is that it could shape change, and was probably genetically engineered by a higher intelligence (re: Shoggoths).
There was an episode of TNG that had a Klingon Scientist along with a Vulcan and Ferengi who were working of a shielding technique that allows a ship to fly through a stars Corona. Otherwise, yeah…
I would think the predators would have engineers and the like. Even if most of their race are brutes and hunters we can’t. When we send out soldiers we don’t send out the guys who make the guns and jets, we send out the guys trained to use them. They have also shown they have some level of intelligence even if they never speak English. So even if most of them don’t have any idea how their technology works there are those of them that do.
But do they wipe their ass? 😉
I know it’s a little off-topic, but would you mind fixing your RSS feeds? I missed out on quite a few updates until I figured it out :3
Not sure what is the problem, but I’m getting it looked into so hope to have a solution soon. Incidentally, Chrome has no built-in support for RSS feeds. It requires an extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/rss-subscription-extensio/nlbjncdgjeocebhnmkbbbdekmmmcbfjd?hl=en
This won’t resolve the current problem, but it may help others in the future who like to use Chrome as their primary browser.
I use Foxish RSS, I like my bookmark-like RSS feeds 😛
Actually it’s in the novels that they steal most of their non killing tech and enslave over races to keep it working. they are capulpe of course of learning some of the needed knowledge for the tech but would rather partake in the thrill of the hunt then study stardrive tech.
if you met your average gun toting hunting red neck.. would you think they were capable of making a car.. or understanding the complexities of internal combustion? nope probably not.. so are the hunters in the movie the only type of predator alien? probably not.. just like sport hunters are not the only type of humans.. i mean watching deliverance say, would you come to the conclusion that the only people in the south have no teeth and play the bango? by the logic you use with the predators you would
Nice point, but let’s take a step back and keep this real. Look at the Predators’ faces. These aren’t erudite omnivores we’re talking about. Those canine fangs don’t imply much time for deep thought.
i see your point totally.. but that is again looking at it only one way and through our eyes. To US sure.. that guys going to be pretty scary.. but back home thats just par for the course. its also the ability to eat meat that made us so damn smart in the first place.. more animal fat meant more brain.. so these guys might be pretty smart.
*sigh* And I do comedy.
I read one book in Predator universe, and one predator in inner monologue mentions female predators are scientists of their species, males hunt and brag, while females are ones in charge.
This page made me laugh out loud!
