Sleeping arrangement
We have a new poll question. Which is your favorite non-Star Wars sci-fi? So, what I’m asking is, other than Star Wars (which we assume you already like quite a bit, or you would not be here) what sci-fi film / television or book is most important to you? We have had to lump all Doctor Who, all Star Trek, Battlestar and Stargate together or the poll itself will become unwieldy. If you need to be specific, just leave a comment. 🙂
Here are the results of the most recent poll… Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised how seriously so many of you take these sorts of questions–even when Biggs Darklighter is a wildcard option! Turns out that most, of those that responded seriously, picked Anakin–although Luke, with his limited training, does come close. This probably owes a lot to the demographics of our readership being pro Original Trilogy, but I like to think that Luke was even more of a prodigy than his father. He did, after all, get very little training with Yoda and was practically an adult at the time rather than a little Youngling… ugh, I hate that whole thing. I like Zayne’s logic, personally…
“Well Yoda trained dooku, dooku trained qui-gon, qui-gon trained obi-wan, obi-wan trained anakin. Yoda trained Luke. Soooooo… After careful consideration–I’d have to say…BIGGS!” – Zayne Carsick.
Anyway, Biggs wins!
“Biggs because he’d arrive after the fight and therefore be the last one standing!” – Paul B.
My favorite from the selections available in the poll has to be Babylon 5 for a couple of reasons.
1. If Humanity were ever to advance to the point of hyperspace travel and alien contact, I think this series depicts the most probable results as accurately as possible.
2. The story has a depth and an integrity to the storytelling which surpasses that of even the original Star Trek series.
Incidentally, while ST (both original and TNG) had fairly good and in-depth stories, I believe that the whole basis of the stories was a good example of cloud-cookoo-lander storytelling.
ST tried to tell us that by some miracle, Humanity will just “shrug off” their evil nature and “mature”.
Even more stupidly, it tried to link that with abandoning belief in God and the supernatural. A self-defeating precept if there ever was one.
Babylon 5 was far more realistic in depicting religions and religious conflict as still being relevent to the Human race.
Oh, and the “final battle” section of the story was fantastic! 🙂
Just for the record, I don’t believe in outer-space aliens and I don’t believe that Humanity will ever find a way to travel at super-light speed. I just enjoy a good story (and I’ve even written a few).
Unlike Reality, Imagination Has No Limits.
As my extremely philosophical (not really) guitar teacher puts it,”Any crazy-ass thing you can come up with, there probably already is.”
Let’s not turn this into a “which show is better?” question and stick with the “What sci-fi film / television or book is most important to you?” which I specified in the blog entry.
To build a show up we don’t need to tear another down.
This isn’t a question of which show is the most realistic either.
I definitely don’t want the merits of religion over atheism discussed here, particularly as I’m an atheist myself (but a non-militant one, ie I’m not preaching my beliefs to anyone).
Readers, please discuss your reasons for your choice in the voting comment thread itself. That way we can focus more on the BMS strip itself in the blog’s comment strip.
I noticed the choice for Blake 7, and read your strips for it.
I have never seen it, but I’m guessing you would recommend it, any comments?
I am at least somewhat familiar with all the other options.
Blake’s 7 requires the ability to overlook incredibly low budget and dated late 70s sci-fi. We’re not talking Battlestar Galactica. But we are talking some GREAT characters. The concept is a group of criminals and rebels who end up in possession of an alien warship that is more powerful than anything in the arsenal of their oppressive (evil) Federation that is hunting them. It’s about the leader, Blake, who is trying to wage guerilla warfare against the massive resources of the Federation with a crew of just 6 (7 counting the ship’s computer). What makes the show special is the conflict between the anti-heroes that make up his crew. Even Blake, at times, is given some serious shades of gray. Some people say that Firefly owes a lot to this show, whether intentional or not. But this is much darker than Firefly, probably because it has an edge of British pessimism whereas Firefly, like most American sci-fi has a more positive and martial theme.
Dammit, I take back my vote for Dr Who and or Bladerunner, and go with Blake’s 7. I loved that show as a kid, loved the music, probably loved one or two of the chicks, built my own wrist comm device thingy ‘as seen on Blue Peter’ and believe Paul Darrow to be the one true god (and I’m atheist too – LOL)
Other than that – fun strip today, kids 😉
That’d be one crazy god. And thanks, re: the strip.

I agree with Neil, Paul Darrow is god!
Chewie can sleep in the main hold with 3PO. He’s a married Wookie, anyway!
Thank you;
Definately added to my to watch list.
Try to avoid spoilers as Blake’s 7 has some pretty major events that might be better if you encounter them as a surprise. Blake’s 7 has quite the ending…
For Blake’s 7 I recommend all of the first season. Season 2 is the most epic with two important story arcs, the highlight being the build up to Star One, the season 2 finale. I personally enjoy the first season the most for a more stable visual style and not being so kitsch. For season 3 I would skip Volcano, Dawn of the Gods, Ultraworld and Moloch. They are on the sucky side, IMO. Though if you make it to season 3, you might be prepared to endure them. Season 4 is a huge change and is a bit hit or miss as well.
Never heard of Blake’s 7. Never heard of Firefly either, what is that?
Careful because of spoilers… the summary at the top of the articles should be sufficient.
Firefly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly_(TV_series)
Blake’s 7 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blake%27s_7
I highly recommend Firefly.
The setting (SciFi Western) is pretty odd, but the characters and casting are excellent. It also has many memorable villains, and well written stories.
Unfortunately it ran for only 1 season + a movie (Serenity), but you can buy the whole thing (including the movie) for about $30-$35 bucks if you shop around.
Blade RUnner is actually my ALL TIME favorite thingy thing, THEN the Holy Trilogy. ^_^
I love your username. BEEF!
Now if anyone asks, “Where’s the beef?” we can point and say, “He’s right there.”
Hang on – people SLEEP in Star Wars?
I thought that was one of its major ‘suspension of disbelief’ feats: the fact that we never notice them sleeping or get any impression of the passage of time!
I’d say Chewie would keep the toes cosy alright.
LOL!
Also, no one ever stops to use the loo. 😛
Would you want to use the “Loo” on the Falcon after Chewbacca used it?
Seriously, I can hold it!
Chewbacca on the loo. Thanks for the image, guys!
Oh my gosh! These comments are almost as funny as the strips. *ALMOST*
XD
Imagine what he has to go through to combat dingleberry-itis.
Yeah, Leia slept on Luke’s shoulder on Mimban, no?
Biggs wins. As it should be.
Hey I got quoted by BMS! I feel so special.
The new poll is tricky. There’s so much on there that I really like; Firefly, Dr Who, Babylon 5, Blake’s 7, early series of Farscape. Kudos for remembering Space 1999! Used to watch that after Sunday dinner as a kid. Everytime I see a wall stapler at work I’m reminded of it.
Virtual High-Five, man! We both got quoted!
There’s a British comedy/sci-fi called “Red Dwarf”. I kinda liked that one, even with all of it’s inconsistency. I’m not sure if it even fits in this group, but I just thought about mentioning it.
Other than that, Star Trek is my favorite (TNG series. I only watched a few of the Original ones. Voyager had interesting characters, but was inconsistent. Deep Space 9 was interesting, but I just didn’t feel the “Star Trek” in it. The only good thing I can say about the new Enterprise series is the opening.), so I’m voting for it.
Of course, it’s just my opinion. No need turning this into a debate (aka. “Flame war”).
I loved Red Dwarf, up to about season 6. I just forget to list Red Dwarf as an option and, to be honest, I was running out of options as the poll was getting huge!
Sci-Fi continuities important to me? I’d ask permission to stem a little beyond the media given…. and say the following:
#1. Lexx
#2. Warhammer 40,000
#3. Gundam
#4. Aliens
#5. Mass Effect
How is that for a top 5?
