Splinter of the Mind’s Eye – Part 26
New to Blue Milk Special? Start reading from the beginning!
Sad news. The Wookieepedia article about Blue Milk Special, put together by Nate, T. Gatto, and Jawa Paul, is to be removed by an admin for citing no clear examples of our noteworthiness.
Apparently they have strict criteria for noteworthiness which must be satisfied for an article to be included. After investigating their rules we have thrown our hands in the air. We’ve been given shout outs by Comic News Insider on their podcast, we’ve been covered by The Geeks of Doom, we are listed in Google and we routinely get 2500 unique visitors per day and 10,000+ page hits, peaking at 30,000! We have over a thousand fans on FaceBook and over 500 on Twitter. We’ve attended cons and been represented by 501st costumers at CV. But shouldn’t the bottom line be that a lot of people read and enjoy this strip? All the time and energy that Nate, T. and Paul put into the article is now residing in Wookieepedia’s trash bin.
I don’t know exactly how to quantify noteworthiness. I know Wookieepedia has it’s own method, but that seems very cold and mechanical. All I know is we put in a lot of time, energy and love into doing this and we don’t benefit in anyway other than the feeling of being able to share some laughs. Oh well. It doesn’t matter really… At least we have readers… that’s kind of important and a triumph in itself.
Today we’re releasing two milk cartons: Smoking Jawa and Boba Fett. These could be T. Gatto’s very best milk carton designs yet! He has done a great job with the add on attachments: Smoking Jawa’s arm and cigarette as well as Boba Fett’s antenna. You can find more Star Wars themed Milk Cartons in our downloads section linked in the menu above the strip (along with helpful instructions).
Download and make your own Blue Milk Special milk carton!
Looking at the top of the Boba Fett carton, I saw a sort of ghost face, and I thought, how is this ghost face Boba Fett? then I looked again and it was like, oh, right.
Wookieepedia is so Weakeepedia.
Me Too! I’m so glad I’m not alone in that….
But it’s all good. After scrolling down, it made a lot more sense.
No ghost face; helmet dings.
I never saw that before, but at least someone looked close enough to crituque it.
Thanks.
Oops, now I feel bad for blurting out unsolicited critique. I hate it when people do that! For penance, I will make your BMS cartons and drink blue milk from them!
Critique is fine. I just need to learn to deal with it better. I have a thin skin. Because BMS requires so much of my personal time per strip dealing with criticism can sometimes feel like a punch to the stomach. And I don’t have Jabba’s belly. Or Declan’s. 😉 Anyway, like I’ve said a billion times, BMS is done because it is enormous fun and a super thrill to push other people’s funny buttons (at least some of the time). Hopefully we made someone laugh today too!
Ahh, I didn’t see it at first. But the white spot does look like a mouth, and the two black dots would be the eyes for a freaked out ghost face. And what has been seen can not be unseen! 😉
Quite awesome milk cartons. In particular I like the jawa’s hood.
The issue is that the Comic News Insider and the Geeks of Doom references are not sourced in the article. Add the sources and see what happens. If it doesn’t change anything, don’t worry! It’s not gone forever. It’ll be exported to the Star Wars Fan Wiki.
If you have any questions, ask an administrator, or contact me, my username is the same on Wookieepedia.
Nate, T., Paul, you guys get that? 🙂
Dr. Kermit, help out by going here starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Wookieepedia:Trash_compactor/Blue_Milk_Special
Thanks for coming on board Dr. Kermit. We hear you Rod. I knew this was an option. So Doc do the voodoo that you do so well and hope this long shot pays off.
Sadly, I can write, draw a bit, and built 3D things out of paper but I am like Sgt. Shultz where technology is concerned (I know Nothing).
Still I say we keep trying, politely, and hopefully push on through.
At the end of the day, if the attitude on Wookieepedia ends up being this anal then I will not miss being listed there. It’s not worth it. My only real problem is that you guys did all that work only to have it undone. It remains a great description of this webcomic, however. I’m sure it can be applied elsewhere online.
Hopefully the whole wookieepedia debacle can be resolved quickly – that’s a great entry the guys put together.
On a lighter note: Milk cartons = awesomeness wrapped in bacon.
Love today’s episode – I feel strongly that the Yuzzem need their own strip 😉
I have a gimmick for the Yuzzem. Two gimmicks actually! However, I had to cut their dialogue out of today’s strip because it was just overloading the whole thing. However, they WILL appear more prominently in the future. 🙂
Like a Biggs Darklighter kind of prominence? 😀
Like Yuzzem (thing) 1 and Yuzzem (thing) 2 !
If the Yuzzems get their own strip than Salicious Crumb needs to crossover from the Dorkside as well in a joint adventure/spinoff! lol
I’m not comfortable using Salacious Crumb now that Neil has made such an imprint on the character. In Dork Side, Salacious frequently takes center stage. Although we had a few strips planned for Salacious in BMS well before I even knew of Dork Side, I am not just a little bit more cautious about how I use the character. I know that must sound weird, but one of the last things I want is for people to think we steal other people’s gimmicks. The only way I can see of approaching Salacious in a way that keeps him unique for BMS is to do something completely the opposite to Dork Side. Not sure how crossovers would work, but it does sound cool.
Oh, mercy – I have no hold over Crumb – I would love to see what you guys do with him. I used him as my foil for many of the Dork Side’s gags, but it was ultimately the same gag – LOL.
Salacious NEEDS BMS – as do we all!
On another note – I hope you’re happy now, the kind words from everyone about my aborted strip have prompted me to pick up the ink pen once again – I’m working on the Dork Wars…
And there’s no Salacious Crumb in these strips. 🙂
I had a feeling it would be hard for you to resist given this outpouring of enthusiasm from our readers! BMS will be happy to link to your strip when its up.
Thanks Noddy (AKA Neil Baker?). A compliment coming from someone whose work I admire is always appreciated.
As for Salaciuos Crumb, I was looking foreward to seeing him in BMS (I even started a carton, which I planned on BMSifying upon his debut). I understand where Rod is coming from, but I don’t think anyone can quite say BMS isn’t a unique entity to itself. I’m sure things will be worked out before Episode VI.
Cheers T (or Mr. Gatto) – do your Crumb thing! We need more monkey-lizard!
And while I’m being cheeky and asking for requests – how about a Yuzzem carton? 😉
I’m waiting for any given character’s BMS debut before making a carton so, unless I make a Dork Side model (with your’s and BMS’s approval) Salaciuos Crumb will have to wait.
I’m also chomping at the bit for Yoda, a Gamoreon, IG-88 guard and more.
As for the Yuzzem;
That’s just Sweetums from “The Muppets” on crack, so maybe.
I hope this Wookiepedia thing gets sorted out. Your comic definitely deserves mention. If it does get fixed, it will be a big advertisement that’s being exposed to more of the Star Wars fandom who might not see the comic otherwise.
Just noticed it but that’s a great Dune collection! I recognize some of them as older printings. Bonus points for having the Dune Encyclopedia.
Thanks 🙂
I got the hard covers at a used book store (now defunct) form $5.00 each, but the Encyclopedia was a hard find (Rubbish sale in N. Carolina) a friend found it for me and left it on my desk when he came into town, because he knew I’d been looking for one.
Also: add stuff to TVTropes, specifically the Webcomics sections of the relevant articles.
Wookieepedia’s admins are cocks, no doubt. I’ve dealt with them a couple of times, with arguments regarding my favorite ship. They list it as 30 meters because a Card Game says so, when in it’s original source material it was no larger than 10 meters long. Those guys have real sticks up their ass about Star Wars, and need to lighten up a little.
I find that happens alot. People just get rapped up in something and suck the fun out of it with one of those crazy straws from Killer Clowns from Outer Space….
Maybe they can’t take a person “Teasing” Star Wars?
It’s too bad. BMS and Hardware Wars are some of my favorite Star Wars thingy-things.
Hey!! Maybe that could be your next Poll!!
i love your comic, though i don’t comment much, but it brings me much happiness! just wanted to say, if the ‘pedia doesn’t want you, then THEY are missing out! 🙂
Oh BOLLOCKS. Sorry Rod and Leanne.
I swear I left a comment here last night.
I had to temporarily remove it (like a admin Nazi) to not risk offending Wookieepedia as we try to remedy our endangered status. I still have the comment and can make it live again soon. I know… I know… I’m a nazi. ;=
Completely understandable, Rod. I would have likely done the same thing. Sorry, I need to think before posting. :/
No, I actually agree with what you said in the post. I actually have some pretty strong opinions on the whole debacle with Wookieepedia, but I guess I have the moderating point of view that comes with not wanting to stir things up and cement our outgoing position over on that wiki site. It looks like it will definitely happen now anyway. Tom Akel at MTV has offered to give us a full feature article next week. I don’t think this will change the minds of Wookieepedia at all, but on the other hand it’s a flippin’ honor to get the attention and support of any news site at all.
True. But I really wish I didn’t need special permission to add something totally relevant to a page, such as the massive size discrepancy with my personal favorite ship. I keep bringing that one up ’cause I’ve fought that battle three times now, with completely reasonable points. I honestly do not know how the SW wiki works.
In any case, I hope BMS gets a place on there. It deserves mention, that’s for sure.
Congrats on getting MTV Geek to cover the Wookieepedia deletion.
I just lent my two cents over at Wookieepedia on the BMS trash compactor page. Hopefully that helps. My Wikia username is Beta Furyan if anyone’s interested.
