Splinter of the Mind’s Eye – Part 28
New to Blue Milk Special? Start reading from the beginning!
A few things have been going on lately and I find they are distracting from the webcomic itself. Whatever happens with our listing in Wookieepedia it’s not nearly as important as just getting on with this strip. And that has been my mentality through this. To keep plugging away at next week’s strips so that we can meet the new daily schedule that we’ve self-imposed. The Empire Strikes Back is coming to BMS! It should crash land here in about two weeks. We’re looking at December 6th as the debut of our much anticipated parody. After our deviations into the relatively unknown regions of Star Wars such as The Holiday Special and Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, we’re sure some of you will be looking forward to BMS getting back to more familiar and beloved material.
But first you will find a series of very funny (well, I think so, but I’m mad) Vader strips on their way next week… leading towards the inevitable confrontation between the dark lord, the hero and the Princess. Seriously, at 5 strips a week, they’re going to be duking it out in no time!
Meanwhile, on the news front, we have a huge thank you to give to MTV who interviewed us for their superb comic news division MTV Geek. They jumped on our side over the Wookieepedia debacle after an admin or two at the prestigious Star Wars wiki questioned the validity of our entry there and have marked it for deletion. It’s quite petty. Having already achieved a listing there without problems, the fact it is now being questioned is a bit suspicious.
Tom Akel, Editor-in-Chief of MTV Geek spotlighted us to prove we met the criteria of mass media coverage. But it appears the latest response among the Wookiee Admins is to dismiss MTV Geek as not being noteworthy itself. Hello? MTV? It’s been around since 1981 or something. It’s getting to the point where I almost don’t care to be listed there now at all.
We need to be noteworthy to be listed on their site. Like I’ve said before, BMS has an ass ton of readers, fans and followers. We’re talking thousands of unique visits and tens of thousands of page loads. We’re ranked inside the top 30 webcomics at one of the largest Webcomic lists online (the highest ranking for a Star Wars themed webcomic), we’ve attended comic conventions, we’ve been covered by Comic News Insider and Geeks of Doom.
Anyway.
You don’t come to Blue Milk Special.com to read about real world drama… you come here for Star Wars humor. Incidentally, we create these strips out of a desire to have fun and laugh at them ourselves. So, let’s not get away from the fact that today sees a new strip with an impending sequel on Monday. Next week we’re going to blitz our readers with one strip per weekday. So, lap it up, fuzzballs! Oh, and keep voting. Life goes on! ;=
I always wondered why Jedi dint make them self fly more often, you see it happen a few times but nothing substantial. It would have at least made the last fight in Episode 3 a little more interesting.
And then their hair would turn bright blonde.
Had to say it.
Shit, what would that do to Luke? Insta warp to lv4? or whatever lv where the hair goes black again…
When I think of ‘flying’ and ‘blue milk special,’ I can’t help but think of Biggs and that cape of his…
Sadly, Biggs has been retired from BMS. But his memory is strong! 🙂
I thought he had some swashbuckling to do ?
That first panel is the single funniest panel I’ve seen in a long, long time, totally due to the derogatory, utterly non-PC, playground banter from Vader.
I’m still laughing while I’m writing this and I can’t even see the image.
Man – it’s fun being childish.
Perhaps you can look at it on the bright side; I bet that MTV and the other news sources will spread the word more than Wookipedia ever would. They may be doing you (and the new readers) a potential service by creating the attention 🙂
My opinion rarely represents the majority (and I’m reasonably proud of that fact), but here it is anyway. From my point of view, I read and enjoy BMS every time it updates, usually within a few hours of the update. It ranks fairly high among my own webcomic favorites, which number about a dozen or so. On the other hand, I’ve barely even heard of Wookieepedia. I think I might have visited there once, looking for some bit of trivia information (which, as I recall, I eventually found elsewhere – possibly IMDB). So I could easily live without Wookieepedia, and am more inclined to do so the more I hear of this debacle.
In other words, BMS is far more “noteworthy” than Wookieepedia, from my point of view.
I wonder if Wookieepedia would be affected if every BMS reader boycotted them (and, more importantly, their sponsors)? Not that I’m suggesting such a thing. Just idle contemplation …
😉
I find it sad that a website that is purportedly created by, for and of the fans will find one of the best (and certainly highest rated) STAR WARS FAN-PRODUCED webcomic as not noteworthy enough, especially in light of the already mentioned nods and recommendations BMS has received…. I have recently stopped accessing their site because, as informative as their “articles” are, it lacks the joy most fans I encounter share when talking about our beloved Star Wars. I say too bad for them!
The boycott would be an interesting experiment…. if only there was a way of being able to not the impact….
Lovin’ this. Vader would like, never do this. But the BMS vader? “K.”
LOVE IT.
You are going to like next week’s strips then. 🙂 More Vader. And some of my favorite BMS strips EVER. Certainly the best SOTME strips so far will appear next week.
‘Zackitally. Straight Vader would have levitated the trooper’s lifeless body ahead as a warning to the others, fuming quietly over his insolence until the next cutscene. BMS’s Vader didn’t so much fall to the Dark Side as slouch in.
Next, we learn that “Skywalker” in one native language is “Lebowski”…
I don’t have a ps3 or 360, but i loved to see Vader easily kick Nightmares’ ass with minimum effort, looking down on him where he lay on the floor, saying “YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE POWAH, OF THE DARK SIDE!”
Huh.
I’ve never heard of Wookipedia.
Is that like some form of Furry pedophilia?
Sorry, that was a bit over the top, but one thing I’ve learned about anything with “-pedia” in it: It tends to be taken over by little people who think they have a big job.
It’s hard to not make fun of a stereotype when people do their damndest to live up to being one. I keep visulaizing a fat, cheeto-dust encrusted basement dweller in his parents house sitting in front of the screen, madly clutching a “Slave Girl Princess Leia” body pillow to his purulent acne-ridden flesh screaming, “Blue Milk Special?! How *lisping wheeze* DARE they make light of the *lisping wheeze* Master’s VISION!!! *idle obscene stroke of the body pillow*
“I shall have them ba-leeted!”
Like I said-hard to not make fun of it, when people insist on being it.
You are naughty. But I did laugh. Yes, I’ve heard many stories about genuine nut job fans. It’s something that Star Wars fandom shares in common with every other fandom out there. There’s always a small group who take things way too seriously. BMS by its very nature does the complete opposite. We’re not likely to ever find a happy marriage between the two sides in that case.
I particularly like the description of the “cheeto-dust encrusted basement dweller in his parents house”. Nice!
Well, not *nice*, really, but well-played! Very snark-tastic!
I know this is long after the fact – but reading through the comments in the dustbin, compactor or whatever reveals exactly this side of geeks gone bad. Or petty and stupid. Take your pick 🙂
Wookipedia could only hope to be as cool as Memory Alpha (yes, I went there 🙂 )
Going back to the comic, the trooper’s suggestion makese me think he’s going to get blasted first. I guess I’ve read too many novels where someone goes in first and then they’re killed.
I’m sure you will enjoy Monday’s strip. ;=
I love Vader’s response. I don’t know why, just that casual ‘okay why not’ to something so pointless makes me smile.
Oh, I also meant to say that Wookieepedia are clearly getting a bit up themselves if they’re rejecting BMS. This comic is probably more noteworthy in real world terms than 80% of the EU stuff. Those guys make all SW fans look bad.
I know. BMS Vader writes himself. 🙂
On my pathetic small screen, the name for Storm Trooper TK8008 looks a bit like TKBOOB, which makes even less sense.
What is with Storm Trooper names anyway?
BTW my 5-year-old figured out that “Daddy calls space men Storm Troopers, but Grandpa calls Germans Storm Troopers”, explaining Star Wars to him is a cinch compared to trying to explain The Second World War.
Yeah, it’s juvenile, but that is why I called him TK8008. He’s a boob.
And here I thought it was also a nod to Something Positive’s K-Bob.
One of my buddies from SWAC (also a Rebel Legion and 501st member) just posted MTV Geek picking up the BMS/Wooki story in the SWAC Facebook group and the link to the coverage. I also saw the MTV Geek posting a few other places by accident. Fan Girl said it best.
TK8008 is classic! lol Added to the list for splinter…..(wink-wink)
You haven’t seen the last of TK8008. ;= He’ll earn his place in your project. 🙂
‘Ey. Rod. Noticed something. I’d like to know…
Do you guys have images you re-use? Don’t tell me you don’t, because more than once I’ve seen Fett doing his usual BMS pose. I noticed Panel 4’s vader image was the same one used in the BMS banner, but flipped. The buttons are a dead giveaway.
I’m not accusing, I’d just like to know how often this occurs. Just out of curiosity, nothing more. 😛
Yeah. It’s no secret. If you read our About page or my “behind the scenes” blog from a couple weeks back, you’ll see that we use stock art in order to turn the strip around so fast. Leanne and I work 7am-6pm day jobs so from the very beginning the only way I could make BMS happen was to get Leanne to draw the key characters in 3/4 poses with multiple arm and head options. In this way its a paper doll method. However, we supplement these stock images with original material created when the demands of the strip require it. I just fixed a couple of assymetrical issues with panel 4. It should not be such an issue now. I had rushed and not noticed.
Crafty. Also extremely smart to do. I can appreciate that kind of neat trick, as I frequently must do the same thing. 😛
I learned all I know about the Expanded universe from Wookiepedia(i havent read all the books) and It is quite ridiculous that they would even question your validity to be there on Wookiepedia. I started reading this because i wanted to laugh about Star Wars made from someone with the same twisted mindset as myself, and im still laughing! Keep up the AWESOME work you funny people!
People who likes the BMS Vader should check out the “Chad Vader” mini-serie on youtube… :3
Is it me, or does BMS Vader always seem to have a jovial expression? Maybe it’s in his faceplate eyes, but the last line and panel seem to fit, as if he’s saying it with a smile.
