Splinter of the Mind’s Eye – Part 3
As Luke searches the Mimban jungle/swamp/bog for the Princess and Threepio, we here at BMS HQ search for an answer to a question…
Want to See BMS at Your Local Convention?
If we’re to attend conventions near you then we need an official invite. You need to write to the show organizers and request Leanne and myself be on the guest list. It may take a few of you, so if you want us to visit your area then consolidate your requests. Here’s the info the con organizers will care about:
Leanne Hannah (http://www.leannehannah.com) has worked on Rob Zombie’s Spookshow International as editor, Rob Zombie’s Whatever Happened to Baron Von Shock as editor and artist, on Casper and the Spectrals as artist, as well as illustration in the comics Pulverized, Perhapanauts, After School Agent and Lava-Roid. Rod Hannah has written for 2x Harvey Award winning Mice Templar, Cereal Geek Magazine and his creator owned indie book Once Upon a Super Hero. Together they both run the popular Star Wars parody webcomic Blue Milk Special.
Quick question: Is the Light Side boring? Or is being on the Light Side morally rewarding? I certainly won’t wear one of those Tatooine farmer robes that the Prequel trilogy erroneously assumed were Jedi robes. Come on, ROTJ gave us Luke in a black uniform and robe. Now THAT is a Jedi. * sigh * You know this whole point came up because I saw another fan webcomic out there that is taking pre-orders for a collected trade paperback of their work. This ain’t legal folks. So, since we’re staying on the Light Side of the Force, does that make us less sexy?
We can’t be that sexy because we’re still looking for helpers at New York Comic Con on October 8 – 10, 2010 at the Jacob K. Javits Center. We will be there with a table in Artist Alley. If you’re interested in helping us out during the show, especially if you are planning to wear a Star Wars themed costume, please get in touch with us. 🙂
New to Blue Milk Special? Start reading from the beginning!
hahahah…
when in doubt! Follow your snout!
^_^
Yes it dose make you less sexy (this is code for “Damn it George ! I want a BMS book”) but who wants to be that sexy ? Lets look at the advantages to the light side shall we ?
Liam Neeson- lets look at his record- he mentored Obi-wan AND Batman,he is on The A-TEAM, he is Aslan, he is Zuse,He will find you and get his daughter back.
Ill just stop there because I think that all thats needed.
Its late and I can feel myself loosing the ability to make sense of words , Ill comment on this in the morning to continue what I was going to say.
Stop there? What about him saving thousands of Jews from the Nazis? Or that he IS Darkman!
That was all I could think of from the top of my head.
I was going to finish this post but I don’t have anything to say that hasn’t been said yet.
*Cough*
*Hack*
*Splutter*
Give us a hint… which comic? Just a weeeee one.
Don’t comic artist usually pay for a table at conventions?
Yes. But if you get an invitation from the convention itself to be a guest (which can be requested by anyone other than the prospective guest in question) you get a free table. That would cut our expenses down to travel and hotel only, making attending MORE shows a lot easier.
I will talk to our local cons, Marscon http://www.marscon.org
and Convergence http://www.convergence-con.org
and see what they think
Different shows may have different policies, but its worth a shot. Thanks.
Thanks for re-writing your Bio in a more concise format, I’ll use parts of it in the Wiki (Currently in Draft #4, and progressing).
Is there anyone planning on attending Origins or Mid-Ohio Con in, both Columbus Ohio, who wants to get together for a group write in?
BTW now that I actually read the Bio on your web page and I see that you are from the U.K., New Zealand, and only more recently the U.S., what imaginary accent should I be thinking of your dialogue in? I mean, for example, that I can’t read something by Winston Churchill, Richard Nixon, John Kennedy, or George Patton without substituting the correct voice, and now that I know the voice I have in my head for you lacks an accent, it just doesn’t fit anymore.
I don’t have to go back and re-read old posts do I? 😉
It is good to see that, after the likes of the Brittish Invasion and Monty Python, we were able to send something of cultural value back to the Old Country. I Guess the Prequils could be considered revenge for the Spice Girls!
Yes, not all imports from Britain the Commonwealth are good. 🙂
Accent? I’m fighting to hold onto my pseudo-British accent, but every so often I drop “g” in favor of apostrophes and have started catching myself drawling my “r”s. Someone pointed this out to me recently and I was horrified. Not that there’s anything wrong with an American accent. Few accents sound as cool and self-confident, but being stuck halfway inbetween is a place no one should ever have to be!
Just put whatever accent you think fits with the blog. Like it’s important. anyway! ;=
Take heart Rod, people in IRELAND seem to be finding it difficult to resist American accents. How many 1000 miles away is that? Half the girls on the (more affluent) Southside of – like – Dublin – like – sound like Valley Girls.
“And I’m going like: Ohhh my God! And he’s all like… yeah? Like no? Like totally?”
This is what I’m surrounded by. ‘Mammy’ has also been replaced – inexplicably – by ‘MOM’.
With the accent trouble, Hugh Laurie has this trouble as well apparently, working with an American accent all day.
I couldn’t watch HOUSE for years. I just couldn’t get used to him putting on that accent. Crinnnge.
Do any of you US folks think it sounds at all odd?
What about Patrick Stewart playing a French Captain, or James Doohan playing Scotty.
Some actors can pull it off better than others but Hollywood will try to ram anything down our throats and tell us it’s a masterpiece of acting.
I’ve even seen subtitles for heavily accented English speaking Britts, and Scotts, It’s almost humorous, but the networks are actually insulting our intelligence by suggesting we cant understand our own language, when it varies slightly.
Boy is this thread off topic. Rod you should kick us off for a while or something.
Believe me, I get tempted at times. ;=
Can someone explain why publishing a Trade Paperback of their own material is illegal? They do own the work, right?
Thanks!
No, they don’t own the property. That’s why copyright and trademarks exists–to stop other people profiting from someone else’s idea and intellectual property. It’s simple. The only protection a comic like ours, or the one I’m hinting at, may remotely have is “parody” and “fair use” laws, which is something debatable and would need to be determined in court.
I feel sorry for people who can’t make money from their comics (even though I think they should), due to copyright laws. 8 Easy Bits is a perfect example, being a hilarious comic but it being one giant copyright infringement denies the author from allowing it to be more than a hobby. I’d say the same about this wonderful comic, but y’all seem comfortable with your situation, so that’s a good thing in itself.
We knew before we even started BMS what the deal would be. We proceeded with making the website and the strips having already resigned ourselves to the fact that this was a fan webcomic. I mean, at some point before we began, we probably thought “hmmm…. wouldn’t it be nice to scrape a bit of money out of the webcomic here and there” knowing that this was an iffy area. So it came down to a simple question… why make BMS? The answer was that I had some really silly gags in my head that I knew I wanted to share with other fans no matter what. So BMS was not about some preconception of making any kind of sustainable living. It was something we accepted would be a fan webcomic from the beginning. Fortunately, we, unlike some, grasped copyright and trademark law. Hence we make a point that while we’re a fan comic we do not own the characters and use them only under fair use laws via parody. No profit is made.
Luke is lookin’ mighty buff, there. Brava, Leanne!
Well, he’s well on the way to his TESB physique by now, I’d say. Must be all that use of his lightsaber…
I wish Ackbar was here to tell me if thats a trap.
Okay, I think i now remember Splinter in a Minds Eye.
Is that the one where someone narrows the beam of a lightsaber in order to cut through a lock?.
Yep, you got it. That scene happens early on when Luke and Leia break into a storage room at the mining colony.
I do think it’s a shame when people can’t make any money off their hard work, but at the same time I strongly dislike people who piggy-back on someone else’s success. It’s a fine line between true creativity and ripping someone off…I think I also base my opinion on whether I enjoy the product in question (oops). That said, I’ll certainly be turning some of my money into your money at NYCC. 🙂
No your doing the right thing. If nothing else your keeping BMS going. If lucasfilm found out what you where doing they would hit you with a law suit so fast it would make the Kessel run look like kiddy ride. And by they way you need to come to a sourthern con!!!! We love you guys down here!!!!!
I will be sending your informantion to our local con.
One of these days I plan on downloading all of the comics, and making my OWN comic book!! 🙂
And I’m caught up. This rocks.
Hell yes, have you seen Palpatine or Darth Malak? Going Dark Side DOES things to your skin… and face… and eyes…
xD
I’ve had the conversation with a lot of artists about selling fan art (which I would think BMS falls under though its obviously more than just a single picture). I applaud and respect your NOT making a book of BMS without permission. Most look at Star Wars and think “Well George has made a ton off the license so what’s the big deal?” and I suppose you could take that route, but if it was YOUR license, YOUR project that you worked hard on, stressed over and finally made it big with – enough so you could have the things you wanted for you and your family etc – would you be happy that others were cashing in on it? Its easy to say “yes” at this stage but don’t be too sure about that. But I digress here… (I used to sell art at a lot of anime conventions where fan art was sold A LOT and the idea of reproducing licensed character art came into question… A LOT)
Yeah, I guess it makes you less sexy compared to others, but it gives you more respect and it certainly makes me appreciate the work you do even more because its clear you respect the material and love the crap out of it like the rest of the fans do. Stay classy BMS (or you know… as much as you can)
