Splinter of the Mind’s Eye – Part 39
New to Blue Milk Special? Start reading from the beginning!
Seen here is the appearance of the Emperor’s Force Lightning… well not really. I’m about to get really geeky and anal about Star Wars trivia, so my apologies in advance to all our more chillaxed readers. This isn’t really the first appearance in pseudo canon of Force Lightning. Read the excerpt below to get a handle on this and compare it to the artist’s rendition for the Dark Horse Comics adaptation. Also, note that Vader had just leapt in the air and thrown his lightsaber at Luke, knocking Luke’s lightsaber to the ground. Vader is slowly landing (using his Forciness I guess) as this excerpt begins.
As Vader drifted slowly back to the floor he grabbed his right wrist with his left hand, made a fist, and seemed to convulse like a man retching. A ball of pure white energy the size of his fist materialized in front of Vader’s hands and moved down toward the wide-eyed Luke.
Something made Luke realize he could never reach his saber before the white globe touched him. He threw up both hands and looked away. So he didn’t see what happened.
His hands seemed to blur. The white globe struck him, bounced back, and contacted Vader gently as the latter touched the ground. There was a soft crack as of an explosion far in the distance. Vader was knocked head over heels and the globe vanished.
But when the white energy ball had touched Luke’s hands, the power inherent in the kinetite, or restrained energy globe, had thrown him to the ground. Had he resisted it unsuccessfully it would have thrown him across the chamber and through the temple wall.
Now he lay on his belly while Vader rolled slowly onto his side, shaking his head in disbelief. His eyes re-focused, to see a shaken but otherwise unharmed Luke crawling slowly toward his lightsaber.
“Not… possible!” Vader muttered, starting to crawl toward his own weapon. The left side of his body armor was dented inward as if by a giant’s fist, where the kinetite had struck. “Such power… in a child. Not possible!”—Splinter of the Mind’s Eye – Chapter 12 – By Alan Dean Foster
The kinetite (or restrained energy globe). LOL. I love how the narrative suddenly inserts this optional description for the reader completely breaking the already awkward flow. The Kinetite energy attack (or restrained energy globe) that Vader summoned in epileptic fashion and threw at Luke is described as a white globe of energy, that moves slowly towards its target (though not so slowly that Luke can retreive his lightsaber, or take a leak in some shadowed corner of the temple). The Dark Horse comic does much to undermine this and give it the appearance of Force lightning.
Hope you liked today’s strip. I’d been sitting on Vader’s “Forciness” catchphrase for nearly a year, waiting for it to make its debut in Splinter of the Mind’s Eye. Inspired, of course, by Stephen Colbert’s “truthiness”, and I believe BMS Vader’s first true catchphrase. Apart from Biggs’ line “Then my work here is done” or Ackbar’s “My Mon Calamari sense is tingling…” BMS has never really been much of a catchphrase strip. I hope Forciness takes off, and I hope if it does, that people remember where it first appeared! ;=

Forciness?
Works for me 😉
I LOVE the Forciness catchphrase! (Hate the Colbert show and the “Truthiness’ phrase, but “Forciness” has a better sound to it. You better patent that phrase before someone else’s Mon Calamari sense starts tingling….
Forciness. XD Actually, SOTME, that’s not canon is it? ‘Cause from what I’ve read, it’s actually physically impossible for Vader /to/ cast force lightning. ‘Cause the electricity interferes with his life-systems.
SOTME is absolutely NOT canon, no worries lol.
No, sadly enough, its completely canon. But at least the events of the Holiday Special aren’t canon, although some elements and characters are.
I am curius to the taste and strenght of forciness.
Forciness, I like it, sounds like the sort of thing Foster would’ve written 🙂
Surrender now and I will kill you quickly, if you promise not to pass out! lol
I’m starting to hate this alan dean foster guy more by every day…
In the guy’s defense, his novelization of the video game The Dig, was actually pretty good from what I recall.
But then again, it’s been like ten years since I’ve read it so maybe I was too young to recognize possibly horrible narrative.
Dude, you are so insensitive!
I thought I was helping your case for the T-Shirt.
Hey, I appreciate it. Both Leanne and I do. 🙂 However, we had to make the decision: do we even want to risk walking a fine line with Lucas Film? The answer is no. We want to avoid problems so that BMS can continue and have a long life. If we do anything that could be overtly infringing then we could end up a dead webcomic.
Forciness is perfect for BMS Vader – and it will be shouted from the rooftops.
Y’know, all this ADF bashing has rocked my childhood (in much the same way as some PT haters claim GL raped theirs – yawn).
Alan Dean Foster was responsible for pretty much every movie adaptation I read as a kid – and I guess I had fondly false memories of him being a seminal influence on my early writing. Now that you have revisited and highlighted his awful prose, I totally understand why I have failed as a writer. Thank you for opening my eyes 🙂
Same here – looking back at my early writing recently I realised I was totally influenced by Foster. I honestly thought that was truly great writing …
Oh, and forciness – love it! 😀
I was initially influenced by L. Ron Hubbard myself. I’m glad I picked up Palahniuk for more modern inspiration.
LOL
I want to be nice about the guy’s work, but then I come across these abysmal pieces of narrative and dialogue that just shock me. I am going to conclude our SOTME parody with a defense of Foster’s efforts. At least, as much defense as I can muster. And only because some of the reader comments have been quite biting. Guys, remember Mr. Foster is real person and no doubt has the internet. His chances of finding this website aren’t as slim as you might think. We now show up in the Google search results for Splinter of the Mind’s Eye and Foster’s name has been mentioned a few times on this site. We didn’t set out to do this parody of SOTME in order to attack Foster’s work. There were a lot of gag worthy moments in both the novel and the comic adaptation that we thought would be fun, but over the course of our adaptation we’ve just found so much more to hone in on than we’d imagined. This was meant to be a 30 strip adaptation. Thank Foster for is increasing length!
A friend of mine knows ADF pretty well – shall I pass on your best wishes? 😉
Yep, I read ALIEN a few times in the early 80s. Loved it.
“His chest burst like a watermelon.” My humanities teacher made me read that book when I was 11 to inspire me…
Wow! Lucky you. It was the only visual reference I had for the film for years. Hadn’t even see the film. Didn’t stop me doing a comic adaptation though. In my version, Dallas holding up the skin was ‘Kane’.
So is that pronounced “force-EE-ness”?
Cor-rect!
Just a little in defense of Alan Dean Foster.
1- This was intended to be a low budget adaptation to an, at the time, single movie of questionable success. Not a part of the major multi conglomerate expended universe Star Wars has become. If made into a film, I bet it would have had a somewhat better following, and several supporters willing to overlook its imperfections.
2- Look at most of the Sci-Fi literature from the 70’s, a little is great, some is good, much more is appalling , at least by today’s standards, where we are standing on the shoulders of giants. I used to love “Night Rider” and the “Six Million Dollar Man”, try watching them seriously now.
3- How much of the garbage we read and watch today, which is hailed by critics and fans alike, will only become a guilty pleasure later, after we come to see in retrospect just how mass media bad it really is ( “ID4”, and half of the original shows on the Sci-Fi channel come to mind).
Taken for what it is SOTME is just a story that needed major revision to hold up better (and if filmed Lucas surely would have made some needed changes).
I just read your first ‘defense’ on wookieepedia only a few minutes ago.
? I don’t follow that thread. I don’t want to feel depressed or angry.
Um, how does T.’s post have anything to do with Wookieepedia? Also, they deleted the article quite a while back. That’s a good idea Rod. The whole thing was a bit ridiculous.
Does Vader’s blue milk get frothy when he adds his electric forceiness to it? Blue cappuccino anyone?
Like!
I’m pretty sure he’s drinking a latte. Were it Blue Milk, then probably.
I gotta say, at first I didn’t like your version of force lightning, but those little plusses are really growing on me. I think I’m gonna like it a lot. (Of course Luke’s expression adds to it’s awesomeness! :D)
Is the force kinetite or whatever emanating from Vader’s coffee cup? That would make it the nexus of his power!
It’s Nexus Coffee!
Canonically, they explain that if Vader used force lightning, he would do a lot more damage to himself than his opponent. IE, his suit would basically act as a lightning rod, force notwithstanding.
AAH! Please, no more! Let the torture stop! I had blocked Sphincter of The Brown Eye from my mind and then you, you just… tore the veil! Damn you! jk keep it coming. You people kick a gundark’s ass.
That last panel ought to be a poster!
I second that! 🙂 Forciness. *Pffffffftt!*
Blue Milk Special: Where Forciness Conquers all!
So…Vader cast magic missile? (It does do force damage, I might point out.)
I think I’ve found my new word of the week. I’m gonna use this in as many sentences as I can (which, knowing the guys i work with, will be about 3 before they get bored and beat me with a loofah)
KINETITE! (Or restrained energy globe) and Forciness.
WIN.

Vader’s Dark side roast coffee – inspired by BMS, surely?
Quite possibly. 🙂
Blame Society films, creators of Chad Vader, also made Chad Vader’s Dark Soul Half Blend coffee. It was just six months ago when it went up for sale, so some major YouTube celebs may just be BMSers. 🙂

Also, major Colbert win!!!!! You guys are awesome. That made my day so much better. Do you watch The Daily Show too? Seth Green was just on the 12/7 show talking about Robot Chicken Star Wars III, and I loved it.
Yeah, he beat me to it. Chad Vader rocks. That, and there are rather uncanny similarities between this vader and chad.
ThinkGeek.com just started offering a Dark (side) roast of coffee! Check it out! I’ll bet it has extra forciness! http://www.thinkgeek.com/caffeine/drinks/e732/?cpg=149H
To Urban Dictionary !
BMS now has its own TV Tropes page.

Check it out!
Rock n’ Roll! Thanks dude! How do we get indexed?
i thought Vader couldn’t use force lightning because of his mechanical hand….
and his other hand, leg, other leg and life support systems. He can do it but it would kill him in the process.
Guess I should have read all the way through before posting….
Apparently he is well grounded. The Emperor must have used a REALLY good electrician when wiring Vader up! lol
They either retconned it/there’s a fan theory that the power of the Kaiburr crystal, which was in such close proxmity to Vader, somehow enabled him to do it. I know, the early EU stuff is just plain weird, but it makes for a good parody nonetheless ;=
See! Fans can make anything work.
Hmmmmm….. Forceyness
Forciness is great coming from Vader. I’m not sure it’ll catch on (though I’d be down with being proven wrong), but it’s great.
Looking at Vader and his goofiness I’m inclined to wonder: What in the heavens was BMS Anakin Skywalker like? I shudder to wonder.
Oh yeah? Well it will prove you wrong! Internet Meme! :-/
I’m picturing BSM Anakin as a laid back surfer dude who hardened into BSM Vader.
You mean BMS! 😛
And yes, I can totally see Anakin as a surfer dude.
Oh and kudos to whoever drew Luke’s face in panel 3; priceless.
Moi.
I completely agree with you Scott, and panel 4 is really great too. Just sipping his coffee, casually repeating the word “Forciness”, just because it sounds cool. Perfectly captures the BMS Vader.
All I did was add a couple of dots. Leanne drew the pose.
Another example of saying so much with so little.
i set here and read all the comic strips hilarous! 🙂
I have to admit, the book ( taken out of context and outside of my own knowledge of Star Wars) was not a terrible read. It was interesting and had pretty solid pacing through-out. It kept my attention and I finished it quickly.
That said, the excerpt provided above was the lone place in the entire novel I literally tripped in my reading. I had to re-read those paragraphs about three times before finally grasping what was written. That one awkward stumble in pacing aside, it was “enjoyable, guilty-pleasure” reading.
So glad I wasn’t the only one caught off guard by that section of the novel.
Hmmm… Even though I’m going to post a defense of ADF, I still think it’s some humorless writing. Did you forget about the narrative describing Grammel’s kicks at Leia? That was seriously unwieldy.
That fight scene (I guess I should really call it a pummeling), while awkward, no where near matched the awkwardness of this scene. I powered through it easily enough. Then again, I work with children. I’ve learned to follow the most unreasonable narration.
i am so glad a friend posted a link to this site on face book i just read through every single panel on here and i must say this is great. i laughed my @$$ of and vader’s “forciness” instant classic. i agree that the last panel needs to be a tshirt.
Wish we could do that. But we don’t own Vader or his likeness so we can’t sell anything.
You could have a T-Shirt with a black gloved hand levitating a coffee mug with the “Forciness” caption underneath, but you couldn’t have the star Trek mug… talk about rock for your back…
Can shapes really be under copy right ?
