Splinter of the Mind’s Eye – Part 7
Re: today’s strip: Apparently Carrie Fisher didn’t wear a bra while in the Princess Leia senator gown. She was told “they don’t have bras in space!”. Ha hah! Good one George. But seriously, they apparently taped her *ahem* chest down, otherwise running around the Death Star would no doubt have been painful!
The hair gag is straight out of the book. It is a scene that was ignored in the Dark Horse Comics adaptation. I guess they just felt that keeping Princess Leia’s hair buns would work better in a visual medium for selling the likeness to the reader. Perhaps they were also prompted to retain her hair buns because of Ralph McQuarrie’s excellent cover illustration for the novel. Who wants to argue with a front cover which is cooler than the book itself? Certainly not us. Leia’s hair buns will be back on Friday and I suggest we enjoy them while they last. 😉
As you probably know by now, we are big fans of Princess Leia here at BMS. If you’re a new reader, however, you may be wondering why she has a cigarette in her mouth in so many strips. It began with Princess in Denial when we decided to acknowledge an aspect of Leia’s character development that was completely ignored in the films: specifically the destruction of her entire home planet, family and friends. Couple this with a Rebellion on the run from a vengeful Empire and the burden of pseudo leadership of the Alliance then what you are left with is a woman with issues. We see the Princess carry on regardless, staunch, tough, defiant, but there’s no way she wasn’t dealing with some Bantha-sized leftovers!
Carrie Fisher herself inspired the idea that Leia might turn to meds and cigarettes to solve her anxieties and insomnia. Carrie Fisher’s book Wishful Drinking is definitely worth a read!
Speaking of which, I just completely revised an old strip in true George Lucas fashion. You’ll have to refresh / reload the page for it to update the image to make sure you’re viewing the new version. If Leia is drinking then you are looking at the new strip. So, in a way, today you’re getting two strips!
Oh, I also added our Smoking Jawa sequel strip into continuity at the start of our interquel material immediately following A New Hope. Enjoy and leave comments.

luke should have totally took a quick peek, even if it meant costing his life… XD
Yep – a small price indeed.
Or he could use the internet.
yeah… but it’s not the same, you have to be there in person to do it…
😉
Helena Bonham Carter in ‘Fight Club’ anyone?
I know this may cost me my geek card. But I never cared for those hair buns of hers myself. I always thought she was hotter with the hair let down. She just looks to bratty for my taste…….
I like Leia’s buns. I thought the style they gave her in ‘Empire’ didn’t look good. She was quite plain and geeky looking.
In RotJ – when her hair was down she was indeed absolutely stunning – once again.
I actually can half agree with you, Trent. The photos of Carrie with her hair down between the filming of ANH and TESB as well as the photos of her in Norway during the TESB Hoth filming where she also had her hair down before filming were great. She looks hot either way. However, I do have a slight preference for her hair bun style. It’s iconic, its geeky, and its cute. It’s so HER.
Yes! I have finally finished this novel! I now look forward to seeing it all spoofed.
Thank you for pointing out this “jewel” of a novel to me, and thank you for bringing back smoking Jawa’s missing scene!
I thought I’d seen just about every behind the scenes photo in existence, but that Mark and Carrie one is new to me. Love it!
Bahahaha!! A Carrie-Fisher-had-to-tape-her-boobs reference! I love it!!
Reference the Jawa strip.
I’m inclined to wonder; Was Aunt Beru was really that good, or just all the smoking Jawa could get?
I feel sorry for the little guy either way.
BTW what brand does he (and Leia) smoke, and will she ever bum one off of him?
Hey! Who is writing this comic, buddy? You or me!!!!!!!!!! 😉 J/K. That’s a good idea man. I’d thought about teaming them at some point.
For some reason when I read “teaming them at some point” I imagined them as a detective team.
He’s a half-size scrap dealer with a fetish for farm wives.
She’s a smokin’ princess from a destroyed world.
They Fight Crime!
“Together they are “The Princess and the Jawa”, this weeks episode “This Time its Personal”.
Found your comic a few hours ago and read the whole thing (to date), superb and hilarious! Brilliant work.
Damn… the whole site in just a few hours, huh? Well, we’ll keep churning them out in the hopes we don’t lose your interest at just 3 per week! Thanks for the kind words, Twosmokes. 🙂
I’m thinking she smokes Unfiltered “Rebels” in a hard pack, and the Jawa rolls his own “Rontos”, out of scavenged buds. Since I look for stupid miscellaneous things to do to support this site, can I make another pair of Card Model Cigarette sleeves to go over existing packs? Maybe a standard issue “Emperor’s Choice” pack for Imperials too?
Now smoking Star Wars (and Blue Milk) fans can step outside the convention doors to smoke in style, while they freeze there collective asses off, or get rained on or what not! They will have a priacical ongoing use, instead of just looking cool (like the cartons).
I mean that the cigarette packs will have a practical ongoing use, the fans can be useful, or useless, at there own discretion.
We endorse this plan! 🙂 LOL
Bring their lungs over to the dark side.
I JUST got that tape joke.
Is that really how her hair got tousled?
I love the angry fuming squiggle above her head
Can someone give me a link to the original Splinter art ?
In person is so much better than pictures. And I *love* her expression in the last frame.
What was Leia doing in the original strip then? If she wasn’t drinking? I’m new here so I’ve seen only the updated one. 🙂
And thank you for taking Splinter along your comic! I kinda liked the book. 🙂
