Star Wars Episode VII Spoilers
Star Wars Episode VII will hit theaters in 2015. When we finally get to the day of release, for those of us who will not be able to attend the first night screening, it could get really ugly trying to avoid spoilers over the first couple of days…
Last Monday, June 3rd, 2013, people were getting upset online and at work about unavoidable spoilers for Sunday night’s episode of Game of Thrones. Don’t worry, no spoilers here! I don’t watch Game of Thrones and have no intention of reading the books. I’m not big on “grown up” fiction. Leanne however, enjoys the show. She has such a busy schedule that she was one episode behind, but we’d had a hectic weekend and she graciously decided to spend Sunday evening with me instead of the television. She consciously avoided the usual places where she might encounter spoilers online, but how was she to know that the athlete Terrell Suggs, who she follows on Twitter, would be so gobsmacked by the episode’s ending, that he would tweet major spoilers right after it aired.
When Star Wars Episode VII rolls around, I know that with my health, I’m not going to have the stamina for an epic line party. I’m not even sure if I will be able to see the movie during its first couple of days after release. The Game of Thrones spoiler debacle has reminded me that social media makes it hard to dodge massive spoilers. So, short of literally putting down our phones and turning away from our computers– hell, turning away from all human contact– we will more than likely go into the theater and find few surprises remain.
Perhaps, as more information comes to light about the nature of the production, casting, photos, etc, I might not be so worried about spoilers. Hey, I don’t give just anything with a Star Wars logo on it a free pass, ya know! After all, what if the film starts looking like style over substance, or the return of Jar Jar-like characters? That’s one spoiler I’d be grateful for in advance. However, at this stage, I have few reasons to be anything but hopeful. Heck, the title for Episode VII should have been “A New Hope”.
Since I don’t plan on becoming a hermit, like crazy old Ben out across the Dune Sea, avoiding major spoilers is going to come down to one thing… “Luck,” as Han Solo would call it. Our BMS Vader would, of course, prefer to call it “Forciness”, but that’s not important right now. 😉
I think the following clip from the Simpsons is appropriate…
I do hope you’re just joking about not being able to avoid social media for a couple days once every few years. Just because BMS Leia has to constantly check Facebook and Twitter, doesn’t mean you have to also!
In all seriousness, I am not worried about spoilers. When the spoilers came out for the films who must not be named, they were so convoluted and indecipherable that they did not spoil anything. Of course, that is probably because the films were so awful and the ability to communicate their content was outside the scope of Humans.
The Phantom Menace spoilers circa the first year AFTER it was released: Ph’nglui space jesus mglw’nafh Anakin Skywalker R’lyeh P’gahg little kid wgah’nagl little orphan annie fhtagn fart jokes and ebonics k’chuck Nyarlothotep trade negotiations continuity be damned Wookiee nipple pinchee.
Yeah, I have to admit; Dash was a great video game level. 😉
Those most guilty of spoilers to me are the filmmakers themselves, with their trailers! They show the film’s beginning, middle, and ending. Like the one for “Super 8”, which showed a scene that happened about 10 seconds from when the end credits started to roll.
Welcome back, Dash!
I had the same problem with Game of Thrones. I’m a couple of weeks behind, so on Sunday we watched the episode from two weeks ago. I was actually on Facebook before the new episode aired and people were already talking about it. I guess it was from the East coast airing or something. Very frustrating.
Regardless, great comic. Keep up the good work!
I sorry, but it has to be said: how could Ep. VII be anything *but* style over substance with Abrams at the helm? Since that announcement, I can only be pleasantly surprised; there’s no way it could be worse than my expectations.
However, I completely agree with the assessment that no matter what else, I thoroughly enjoy this comic.
Sigh, I’m not watching the next Star Wars movie. Disney will finish what Lucas also finished. My exposure to Star Wars is the original three, in their original form, and BMS. I watch the originals on VHS. As more turd burgers are dropped, those tapes will probably become worth their weight in gold!
I, myself, wish they would release a few Red Herrings.
I remember when Joss Whedon was bringing back Colossus in Astonishing X-Men. There were leaks that it was instead, Jean Grey. (leaked artwork, memos, etc.) then when the issue hit the stand they brought back Colossus instead. It was really well done, and would love to see the rug get pulled out from underneath us like that, sometime during the next Star Wars run.
I am inclined to wonder how many copies of SOTME, The Holiday Special, and SOTE have been sold as a result of BMS.
I had no interest in these stories but, once they have been MBSified, I now want to read, play, or see them.
Love the Simpson’s clip, one of my favorite moments of the show. 🙂
As a kid I had no problem already knowing what was going to happen when I watched the original trilogy. I’d been thoroughly spoiled by the comics and the action figures (Boushh = Leia), and was just eager to see it all for real.
As an adult I feel that spoilers ruin part of the experience, and I try to avoid them. And for movies where I have already read the book(s), I have thankfully forgotten most of the details, so that takes care of both spoilers and the “Hey, that’s not what’s supposed to happen!”
Forgetting things is such a bliss. I still remember watching Ghost in the Shell – Solid State Society a second time, after I had forgotten so much that a big reveal was completely unexpected. I guess I’m not going to forget that again.
