Bringing order to the galaxy
As mentioned in episode 4 of the podcast, I’ve been working on some cantina customs, including Holiday Special customs. Here’s what I’ve got so far. Leanne looked at me and said “Oh my god… you’re not going to make Harvey Korman next, are you?” I smiled back at her. “I wasn’t planning to…”
In these shots you can see a few custom figures I made of obscure Star Wars characters. There are the two Duros on the left, the one of the right being my simple version of Baniss Keeg (who happened to be female). In the center you can see Tork (the bouncer), Ackmena (Bea Arthur) and Ackmena’s little Sidekick. Behind them Wuher serves drinks. In the back of the picture is a guy who looks like he’s from the coast guard. That’s Gela Yeens, one of Declan Jabba’s goons. He’s conversing with another goon called Boelo. I also made Mosep, the little walrus guy in a red uniform. He’s supposed to be Jabba’s accountant. In the second photo, Han is hitting on Jenny, inspired by the cut Cantina scene where the two make out in a booth.
A pet peeve of mine is the confusion of how many band members made up the Modal Nodes. I am in the process of creating the drum set for the unreleased figure, but I’ve collected the full band PLUS custom made the additional Bith patron. That makes a total of eight Bith aliens in the cantina during the original film.
I’m working on the Tonnika Sisters, the Corellian Pirate, Ubiquitous Man, Walrus Man #2, Solomahal, Arleil Schous, Chalmun etc. If anyone is interested, I have also completed Declan Jabba and his goons from the Docking Bay 94 debt collecting scene. Let me know.
These pictures remind me of the cantina band BMS strips. They were good. Think we’ll ever have any more of those??
“Minus your hand, of course…”
That line had me screeming! xD
One of the best BMS lines EVER!!!!
Speaking about the Podcast… just tell us when you could need a “guest star”. 😉
I ended up with 23 Modal Nodes, so I took the Max Rebo Band instruments and made a couple more to make a sort of Modal Nodes Orchestra and whenever someone asked, I just said there were 23 in the band.
Awesome work on the figures/diorama!
Just to make a bad pud, I’d say you did a wonderful Maudification of the Bea Arthur figure! You need Harvey Corman, and Richard Prior now!
I’ll bet a good Delcan Jaba could be made from a Rancor keeper figure and some sculpt a putty.
Oh, and please put a dead Greedo in the corner. 🙂
I keep forgetting just how bad SWHS was, and your podcast brought it all back again. Agree that the best parts were the Cantina bit and the cartoon, although at the time I was excited just to see the robots and the special effects.
(Hard to believe now, that there were no internet clips nor home video of Star Wars back then. I had (and wore out) a couple of 8MM film cassettes with bits from the movie. Now a days, you can say “what did the undercarriage of a y-wing look like?” and download a hi-res 3D model. Back then, you flipped through bubblegum cards or grainy magazine photos. Thinking back on the lack of reference material, it’s a wonder the Marvel SW comics were as _good_ as they were. )
Your podcast also reminded me that not only did I spend money on the Christmas In The Stars long-playing album, but also on the 45 single …. oh, the shame, it burns . . .
Today’s strip is hilarious, btw!
I’ve never been good at internet-phrases. What does “HS” stand for?
SWHS = Star Wars Holiday Special. Just an initialism, not an internet acronym like LOL.
Right, “Holiday Special.” Don’t feel left out, feel glad you didn’t know. 🙂
We kids would take tape recorders into the movie theater so we could at least hear Star Wars. It wasn’t until the mid 1980s that VHS became cheap enough that everyone could afford one.
I laughed like crazy when I read “minus your hand, of course…”
I have been long-awaiting this part of the strips to see how the big reveal will be handled…no pun intended. 🙂
Hahaha! Like me on facebook? Okay, but I’ll keep you hidden. Oh, the hurt!
And now that I’ve started reading Vader with a british accent I can’t stop. It’s far too funny! 😀
I prefer to see him as a slow version of James Earl Jones. I think it works better if he still talks with the “sound” of Darth Vader, otherwise it’s too far removed. But glad to hear it works in different accents. I suppose a New Jersey accent would be funny too. 🙂
Awesome custom figs!
I like to read Vader in Dave Prowse’s voice – a good old west country yokel 😉
Ha ha!
You’re bonkers by the way.
So, I was wondering when (hopefully when and not if) you finalize the OT what is the most likely project to do then, as you have stated not planning on the PT? That “once Upon a Superhero” thingie or some other film-series adaption? I think you could do a very well Indy or LotR adaption! (at least i hope it would be something like that, because I wouldn’t get any of the jokes in a BMS-TREK)
I’d love to do a LOTR BMS. I don’t any ideas for Indy. I scripted about 20 strips for a ST:TNG BMS style strip. But I didn’t structure it as a chronological thing. Each strip was just a stand alone gag, and yes, you would need to be a fan of ST:TNG already to appreciate it. But it was and would be a finite project of only about 20 strips. The PT would be the same deal. A very limited number of strips, just covering a few things.
With LOTR I’d want to follow the entire story from Hobbiton to Mordor and back. So that would be as epic a project as Blue Milk Special and that idea terrifies me. Now, with the movie version of the Hobbit, I wouldn’t mind playing with that too. I don’t think we’re going to do any of these, however. BMS is such an undertaking already that by the time we wrap ROTJ and possibly the Thrawn Trilogy (if we decide to go that far), we’ll have other priorities in our lives.
Sadly, I’ve had to accept that Once Upon a Super Hero is dead. I can’t continue the project with Leanne because the original art (by John Amor) would constantly be compared, and having Leanne redraw the entire first issue would be wasteful. We have a couple of projects that are children’s story books, and one project that is a manga comic. They have to fit around Leanne, and she has some professional comic work lined up for the next couple of months.

Fitting!
Better than Christian Singles, or Tide washing liquid. It’s based on what is in the blog, but I don’t recall discussing religion or laundry before. Some weird advertising on this site sometimes.
I got an ad for “combat lightsabers,” which seems relevant.
It’d be funny if they did image scanning as well as text searching, saw your figurines and put up ads for marzipan or fondant.
Well, maybe not “funny,” but I’d laugh.
Hopefully Christian singles’s groups actually have women now. We used to joke “bring your own women” because GenX was/is 4:1 men:women in GenX.
You’ve excelled yourselves Rod and Leanne Such a funny strip today! Lots of great lines.
What?!?! You actually MADE some of those figures? Plasticine? Amazing :O
Thanks. They are action figures that I modify with a knife and super glue, and then sculpt new parts using sculpy modeling clay / plastic. Hell knows what it is exactly, but it’s used by toy sculpters. I then paint as necessary, and voila, a decent Bea Arthur. Not so sure about Tork.
I was confused about the red mark on Luke’s eye but then thought, I bet it’s in the movie and sure enough, it is. You guys don’t miss anything!
Great action figures!
Anyone read the Harvard Lampoon’s”Bored of the Rings”?
Good book that!

I’m really impressed by thouse custom figures. Very nicely done.
