The Wrevenge of Khan
How will Khan Noonien Singh defeat the Rebel Alliance’s new ally, the Starship Enterprise? We shall have to wait and see. In the mean time, Khan needs to try asking actual authority figures and not TK 8008, or “White Vader” as he sometimes styles himself.
Interesting story, Leanne lived her whole life, up until recently, having never seen Star Trek I-VI. More amazingly, she had somehow managed to avoid the spoilers concerning what happens to Spock in Wrath of Khan. Yes, hard to believe! She grew up with The Next Generation and had seen Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis, but none of the originals, and next to nothing of The Original Series.
So, biting my tongue, I convinced Leanne to watch selected highlights of The Original Series with me before going through the films. I wanted her to get to know Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Chekhov (well, not so much Chekhov) and Uhura. Specifically, I wanted her to see the bond that Kirk and Spock built up through the series. I knew if I just showed her The Motion Picture, followed by Wrath of Khan, then the impact of Kirk and Spock’s big scene at the end of the latter would not carry as much of a punch.
Somehow Leanne kept her word, avoiding spoilers and searching for anything to do with Star Trek online over the several weeks that this binge watching of The Original Series took. We snuck in a few bad episodes for good measure to give a more rounded take on the series. And of course, we watched Khan’s first appearance.
When we finally reached the scene at the end of Wrath of Khan, it had a renewed impact on me, but was an ENORMOUS shock to Leanne. “What happens to Spock?” “He’s not dead!” “They bring him back, right?!” “Oh my god!”
I have to admit, if I had my way, the version of Khan that we would have used for Blue Milk Special would have been his look from Space Seed. I think he was a much better villain and character in the series, as opposed to the film. In Wrath of Khan, aside from his distracting man-cleavage, he was really just a run-of-the-mill revenge-filled psychopath. Aside from some clever tactics hiding in a nebulous cloud, his obsession with revenge stole a huge amount from his character. In Space Seed he was a charismatic, cult leader, capable of swaying Kirk’s own crew against him and out-thinking his enemy. He wasn’t the almost pitifully consumed villain that he would later become.
As for Star Trek II starring Benedict Cumberbatch, we never went to see it. I didn’t think a whole lot of the first one by Abrams. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t justify the need for the pseudo-reboot. Recasting classic characters whose actors’ personalities were as much as part of the characters we came to love is never a good idea. Why remake a Humphrey Bogart movie? Bogie’s characters were always shaped by his onscreen personality and what made his movies classics. William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelly… they all made those characters their own and what we came to love about Star Trek. So, if a reboot is going to work, it has to be exceptionally good in all areas.
The second Abrams film didn’t peak my interest. I did not like the style and scenes I had seen promoting it. Incidentally, I really like Cumberbatch, but I’m not a pop-culture whore so there are plenty of comic book and sci-fi movies I happily pass up. I can’t comment on “modern Khan”, so don’t expect him to show up anytime soon.
We ended up sticking with the Wrath of Khan version for BMS because it was the most iconic look for the character, better known by geeks and working better as a sight gag. Because we had given Khan a cameo a while back in BMS, we were able to re-use the artwork and save time while our most precious resource, time, was short.
So those are my Khan memories. Funnily enough, as I wrote this, I just squashed a baby centipede crawling across my chest. One of the scariest things I remember from my childhood is the earwig scene. Not a good time to be writing such a blog!
I think all of us were terrified by that ear scene. The look of horror on the two crew members was perfectly captured, making everyone question our own bravery. Putting the things in the helmets, then having the men wear them, took away any hope of escape, and that’s the most terrifying part of it all. Thank you for sharing your story, by the way.
To my regret, I saw the rebooted Khan. Cumberbatch is a great actor (and he did great with what he was given), but there’s no getting away from the fact that, well, he’s the epitome of “pasty pasty white Englishman”. I just couldn’t accept that he was named Khan Singh. Is that shallow of me?
I’ve actually run rings around this particular issue. If we wanted to be accurate, neither Mantalban nor Cumberbatch should have played Khan. Now, Ben Kingsly is another story all together.
I’m probably going to regret saying this, but I don’t not like the reboot. Maybe I’m just odd…I don’t hate JJ Abrams for them, and don’t have any huge issues with the series. Maybe its because I’ve always been someone who rolls with the changes. If I like something…I like it. If not, I don’t.
With the reboot movies, though, I often feel that the writers try too hard and that kind of gives the movies a bit of a clumsiness to them that they could otherwise have avoided.
I’m being cautious about SW7 as well, but that’s because of SW1, 2, & 3.
Hey, I like the new ST movies, because they are entertaining. And that’s enough for me. Of course, I haven’t seen much of the old ST, so I’m not attached to it.
I’m a bit cautious about SWVII though; not because I think he isn’t serious, but because all the early stuff we saw seemed to be nothing but a McQuarrie lovefest. I have great respect for the artist, but concept art should stay concept art, imo. So cautiously optimistic.
JJA has built up some bad karma by doing what he has done to Trek. I’ll give him one chance to turn things around by doing SW7 and doing it right.
I’m extremely cautious going into SW7.
However, if anyone from Disney / LucasFilm is reading this, feel free to buy my endorsement. I am corruptible for cash.
Remember the Little People (I think Fisher Price makes them)…
I am extremely curious which “bad episodes” of TOS you showed her.
“The Apple”? “Spock’s Brain”? “And the Children Shall Lead”?
You had so many from the third season from which to pick!
Was it “Turnabout Intruder”? It was “Turnabout Intruder”, wasn’t it?
Personally, as much as people love “City on the Edge of Forever” and “The Trouble with Tribbles”, “A Piece of the Action” is my go-to episode for a quick TOS fix.
Here is the list as best I can remember it.
The Cage
Where No Man Hase Gone Before
The Enemy Within
The Man Trap
Balance of Terror
The Menagerie
Arena
Tomorrow is Yesterday
Space Seed
The Devil in the Dark
Errand of Mercy
The City on the Edge of Forever
Operation Annihilation
Amok Time
The Doomsday Machine
Journey to Babel
Mirror Mirror
The Deadly Years
The Trouble with Tribbles
Journey to Babel
A Piece of the Action
The Enterprise Incident
Spocks Brain
For the World is Hollow and I have Touched the Sky
The Tholian Web
Plato’s Stepchildren
The Empath
Requiem for Methuselah
All Our Yesterdays
Thanks to my friend Garret for helping me compile a best and worst mix. Also, we made sure to include as much of the good stuff for McCoy as possible. He’s Leanne’s and my favorite character. So underused.
You watched Journey to Babel twice? Good call! That might be my all-time favorite episode. “Why did you marry her?” “At the time, it seemed the logical thing to do.”
LOL. No. Typo.
A star destroyer would do well against the Enterprise, I’m thinking.
I, too, was shocked by the horror of the Ceti eel scene. Plop on face, slow crawl to ear, slither into ear, much screams. And also Khan’s matter-of-fact explanation of what they will do to you beforehand is quite chilling.
They’d be handy in convincing a high-ranking Imperial to hand over a star destroyer!
Have you been checking out the fan-made productions of classic Star Trek out on the web nowadays? I can think of four off hand, and that’s not counting the excellent Voyage Trekkers. Sometimes I wish they would cooperate and coordinate but I don’t think that could happen, for many reasons. Still, I think they are doing a better job of preserving and extending the Star Trek legacy than Abrams Trek!
If you want to GAIN appreciation for the much-ignored character of Chekov, see both the old and new actor in the episode “To Serve All My Days”. Written by original series head writer D.C. Fontana!!!!! So nostalgic and respectful.
I liked Koenig as Bester in B5.
He was so damned good as Bester! Especially in the later seasons. One of the major reasons that I hung in till the end of B5.
“No capes! … That is Final!” —–Edna Mode.
LOL! Excellent movie. Maybe we should give Edna a cameo!
Oh, Edna should definitely show up, on the “good” side (since helping the heroes seems to be her hat).
My fave scene from the movie was the one with her stating her name into the security system, with very careful diction, and what happens immediately after. 🙂
Someone called it the best Fantastic 4 movie in existence….
I like the reboots as I take them as a totally separate from the original Star Trek Universe, kind of like the alternate universe with the Empire instead of the Federation. My main beef is Kirk getting his a** handed to him in every fight. Couldn’t he win at least one of them? 😀 I do love the redesign of the Enterprise (externally) in the new movies. It’s really good.
So no old Khan comment on new Khan 🙁
For some strange reason the pictures you have of Khan remind me of Zoolander, maybe you can have a Pose Off 🙂
Has no one noticed the creepy white dots that look like eyes in the first panel?
Rod,
Wanted to let you know I am unable to see the comic. I’m using Safari on an iPhone 6+. I can see your blog and comments but no comic 🙁 I tried looking through the archive and none of them are rendering. I am hoping it’s just my phone being dumb, but wanted to let you know just in case.
All the best,
Paul
Is it just me, or have all the comic images vanished? =<
Aaaanyway, I too prefer the original series episode's Khaaaaaaan! – the Ahab Khan is just a little depressing, and even if she was part of the rebel alliance and a traitor, the death of Marla McGivers off-screen in the interim is sad.
I think in Into Darkness, they really should've had someone else to play Khan, or had Mr Crunchybum play the role of Joachim. I suppose it could be retconned in Star Trek Three's Company into it being him having taken on the name of his leader for reasons unknown. I also think that, rather than rebooting the series entirely, I would've preferred that they'd gone into Riker & the Titan, or Dax & the Aventine or… I don't know, something entirely new in the Star Trek universe, but I do understand the reasoning behind the reboots, and I mostly like them. They're not the Star Trek films I would've made, and they're not really the Star Trek films I was hoping for, but I do like them.
I'm warily hopeful and hopefully wary of VII. I think there's potential, and I'm looking forward to going to it with deliberately lowered expectations so that even the return of Jar-Jar would be exciting.
Actually, I hope Jar-Jar does return. And is torn limb from limb by feral Ewoks.
No one yet? Isn’t it obligatory to post, “KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!” In these circumstances?
I have come to find that TK8008 is my favorite BMS character. He reminds of Johnny from the orginal Airplane! Just having fun with everything.
Well done 🙂
You can only see the first and last comic. Where’d the other buttons go?
The site navigation is broken. Use the calendar in the right side bar to navigate, or use the Archive section in the menu bar.
Looking back at Wrath of Khan I can’t help but be impressed with the shape Ricardo Montalban was in. Cleavage or no, the man was 61 during filming.
Fan though I am of Benedict Cumberbatch, to me there will always be only one Khan.
