Vader killed my father…
—EDIT 12.30.11 – We will not be updating again until 1.1.12. Disregard my comments below about the Friday update. See you next year!–
Hope all those celebrating Christmas had a happy one. I want to thank Scott Wilkins of Citrus Comics for gifting us with a BMS / Citrus crossover. We returned the favor with a Citrus / BMS crossover of our own.
We have an announcement
This Friday will be the final twice weekly update in a long while. Re: the recent issues. I am going to try and organize the time off work needed for surgery on my cervical spine. My health issues aren’t limited to the herniated disc, and right now I’m a handful for Leanne to take care of. In addition, the trivial complaints about BMS, nitpicking and general excess of nerdiness by a very small number of our readers has severely dampened our motivation to keep working on this FREE comic fan project.
Thanks to the outpouring of support from the usually quiet majority, we were recharged enough to not want to give it up completely. We will only update once a week for the time being, which will give us more time to focus on more important and more rewarding aspects of our lives. For anyone disappointed about this, keep in mind the other alternative was stopping BMS indefinitely. However, we’ve put a lot into BMS so we don’t want to walk away from it if we can find ANY other way of continuing. I have lots of plans for Return of the Jedi which I would love to realize, but who knows if we will actually make it?
It’s easy to look at BMS and say, “oh, those guys use stock art. Can’t be hard at all.” It takes between 3 to 6 hours per strip to produce. Sometimes much longer, particularly when new art is required. BMS started as a stock art production and has always been produced using stock art. It’s not a secret or a deceit on our part and has never been. We’ve outlined how we produce BMS several times in the past, indeed from the very beginning. It was an entirely practical decision and it has allowed us a level of quality that many other webcomics can’t achieve on this sort of update schedule.
The only reason I ever created Blue Milk Special was that I felt that using a library of pre-drawn characters and poses would enable Leanne and myself to team on a project without it needing her constant attention. Leanne works as a freelance comic artist (check out her website), and we also have aspirations of launching our own original web manga next year. I never wanted to take away from her opportunities to work with established writers in the comics industry, so using stock art prepared in advance for BMS seemed like a clever and resourceful way to sustain such an epic webcomic project.
It has worked to varying degrees of success. From the point of view of our readers, there are 400+ strips and there has been between 1-3 comics per week almost solidly for the last three years. From our point of view, there has been repeated tension as we try to keep the comic flowing steadily without it impacting our progress on other projects. Unfortunately it has been really hard to find additional time outside of BMS to do any other projects together. We can also no longer justify the expense of comic convention appearances solely for Blue Milk Special.
That isn’t to say that BMS has not been enormous fun or unrewarding. It has, and frequently is. But at the end of the day, it’s a non-profit project, based on somebody else’s intellectual property. We’d much rather be pouring our spare time into our own original intellectual property. We hope to debut this project sometime in the next few months. We also hope that many of you will not only enjoy this new project, but not hold any frustrations, regarding our reduced BMS schedule, against it.
Hope to see you back on Friday to share the last strip of 2011 with us!
I’ am glad to hear that you are getting the surgery Rob, and that you are keeping BMS going. Even once a week is good for us hard core fans.
Darn my fingers that was supposed to be Rod. Sorry dude.
Thank you very much for your strip. Please stay focused on getting better — that is more important than anything. One strip a week is better than nothing and we readers will get by somehow.
Thanks. And don’t forget we will be back on Friday. Once per week will start next week, the first week of 2012.
Dinosaur comix uses stock art and it is hilarious, as is BMS!! As for the negative Nates and Nancys who bitch about BMS, F**k ’em! π Don’t waste your energy on their crapola. This comic is fun and free, two things that are not always in abundance in the world. As for your health, best of luck, hope your surgery is quick and painless. Happy Holidays to you both and thank you for the continued laughs π
Thanks, Becky. Unfortunately the surgery won’t be quick, or painless. But I have to wear my long term goggles to appreciate the chance I have to be free of, or at least reduce, the debilitating affect and the pain.
I hope you get well real soon, Rob. You guys do an Awesome job on this comic & I’m sure a few days won’t make big difference. Wish you all the best!
Thanks. It’s Rod, btw. π
I’m sure we the (real) fans don’t mind about having one strip a week, you have some strong reasons to do that and I’m sure you work as hard as you can. Take your time and do it well, I don’t want you to do bad strips. You know, I like to translate good material π In fact I have to say that I’m having a lot of fun translating the strips to Spanish, I’m really enjoying it and I’m nearly in love with the characters, the drawing, the gags… May the Milk be with you and I hope you get better π
I love it, he even wants to translate a few cartons!
You should rent yourself out to unscrupulous High School, and College, kids who do not want to do their Spanish Homework!
Wishing you all the best in the surgery. BMS is awesome, and we’ll stick around no matter how long we have to wait between updates. π I love that Yoda has an iPod in this strip…awesome. π
Hope you feel better soon, Rod! We will take whatever you guys feel comfortable putting out! We will still love the comic no matter how often you guys update!
I’m sure that most people wouldn’t have noticed the use of “stock art” if you hadn’t brought it up. Ultimately what it comes down to is, viewers will care about production and more about the end entertainment value. As long as you keep making this worth coming back to read, most of us won’t care how you put it together. I mean, look at XKCD. STICK FIGURES! And yet, it’s the wit of the strip that brings the readers back, not the art. So don’t worry about that too much.
Good luck with your surgery. Chronic pain sucks all the big ones, and pain in an important part of the body makes one suffer terribly. I hope you can be healed, good sir, and soon.
Hey, if I can get BMS once a week, plus John’s Alien site and Phil C.’s insanity and a bit of Darths and Droids, then I am well sated – if not a little spoiled for free goodies.
So do what you gotta do, and make getting fit and well your priority.
Much forciness being wafted your way.
Insanity? I resemble that remark!
Always a prankster, that ghost Obi Wan. Like during the Death Star attack, when he gets Luke to shoot at the surface for no reason, then laughs when Yavin control asks what he’s doing!
Get well soon, Rod!
Haha, nice one Phil! A Three Stooges reference is never a bad call.
“Wafted your way”. LOL. Damn sprouts!
I have to learn how to edit my own damn writing some day. That should have read, “viewers will care LESS about production and more about the end entertainment value.” Pictures might be worth a thousand words, but a single word can be worth a million times its weight in gold some days.
Even a little BMS is better than no BMS
Please heal well!
Yay! I’m happy you still like my simple contribution. And your incidental trade will be on the site by tonight.
And remember one of the cardinal rules of the professional cartoonist. Pay no heed to detractors. They don’t like how you’re directing the plot? Screw ’em, they can make their own comic if they don’t like yours.
As for your back surgery, I want to say little good comes from such things, but on the other hand, my Uncle had back surgery and after that and a week of being on all fours, he was fine and one wouldn’t know the difference. So I applaud your courage, and the beauty that is a spouse that takes care; being sick now, I love my wife SO much for being supportive of my recovery. Best Wishes, Dear Hannahs, and May the Schwartz, I mean Forciness, be with y’all!
Chaz shoud really get more common sense, mouthing off to the Emperor, no problem, but he’s mad to fight Biggs!
BTW Scot don’t forget my Fan made crossover with the milk cartons.
http://citruscomics.com/2011/09/mr-t-fan-stuff/
BMS Palpatine is a softy. Chaz should be fine. Besides, could be a Jedi Mind Trick that put him in ol’ wrinkly face’s lap.
Yep, cartons remembered all very and happily well. It’s like we’re united by fate.
Get well soon Rod. Hope all goes well and you and Hannah have a prosperous New Year!
Thanks, Josh. It’s Leanne, not Hannah though. π
Well…don’t I feel like a heel right now, lol. Proof that you should proof read. π
it amazes me how you find the time to update so often given the quality of the artwork and the remarkably high strike rate the joke writing keeps up (more often than not it genuinely makes me laugh out loud)
keep on fightin the good fight
and get well soon
I can only echo the previous comments. I know how serious spinal surgery truly is, and I hope you have a speedy recovery.
You and Leanne have a great strip in BMS, and I look forward to your new one
Hee-hee, my brother has quite the sense of humor ;P
Reference the Strip, I always wondered how Yoda knew about that lie. π
If you need to update once a week, do it. Hell if you can only update once a month do it. We’ve been spolit for ages with 2 and 3 strips a week.
No-one here has the right to complain about about BMS because:
It’s free!!!
It’s not Leanne and Rod’s job.
It’s just for Fun! (with a deliberate capital F)
Don’t all animators use stock art?
All the best with sorting work and your surgery.
Sorry if I’m rambling, it’s very late here and I’ve been playing computer games for hours and am getting too old for it. π
May the forciness be with you!
You’re never too old to have fun, Paul. Whether it’s computer games, roleplaying, or adventure holidays, it’s all good for the soul. And thanks. Hopefully it wont come to us having to update less than 4 times a month. :-/
Wow, I can’t believe Luke completely missed how Yoda suddenly changed what he was saying. Clearly he has a LOT more training to do.
More importantly, Rod and Leanne, the two of you should do whatever you need to maintain stability in your personal lives before keeping BMS going. It sometimes seems like you love your readers a little too much ;). Honestly, I would rather have a new BMS strip less frequently than once a week if I knew it was making your lives easier. Hope you feel better Rod!
We don’t want to lose that momentum. We like that we have an audience who interact with us and give us feedback. If we become erratic and infrequent with our updates then people might stop visiting regularly and the interest level will fall. We know we have constantly been building a readership base for the last three years and we know how tough it is for webcomics out there to do that, so to actually have readers is something we’d hate to lose.
Get well Rod and 1 Strip a week is better than nothing at all. I started reading the strip a little over a month ago and it has made me laugh so hard. I love it.
Hey, if you need to cut back on the schedule to focus on your health, then so be it. Staying healthy is more important than amusing a bunch of people on the internet.
Besides, we win out in the long run. The more healthy you are, the longer you’re able to keep making awesome comics. It’s a win-win!
I hope all goes well with your health issues. While I’m sad to hear it means less BMS, it will mean you’ll be able to do more things later so do what you need to.
As someone who saw the original in the theater as a kid – and managed to block out the holiday special until you traumatized me all over – I am thoroughly enjoying your parody. I hope it continues – at least through Jedi.
Rod, hope your stay in the bacta tank short is. The small-minded people drag you down please do not let. Not worth it they are. May the Forciness with you be.
I was always taught that if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’e say anything. The only criticism I believe in is constructive feedback rather than the kind that is purely for the sake of deriding others, and is both hard to ignore, and hard not to let it bring you down. I love your strip and have since the first strip I read and I’m glad you’ve decided not to can it all together, it would be a waste of a great concept and some great work from you both over the past 3 years. In saying that, your health and livelihood are more important that feeding our need to be entertained and I’m glad to see that you have decided to focus on your surgery. For the sake of your health and well-being, I can ween myself down to 1 a week BMS eps π
And to all the haters, if you have that much to complain about, don’t bother complaining, just go and find something else that you do enjoy. I’m sure there’ll still be plenty of regulars out there happily willing to read each installment without complaint or derision.
You need to keep going. George Lucas (younger) kept going and gave us the quality product known as THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY, but George Lucas (old) decided quality story lines suck so then he gave us the “prequel.” You just need to be George (younger) and finish the best undertaking of George. You do an excellent job. You bend the story, but again you are aiming for people who know what is going on. You also are going for comedic angle instead of taking the whole thing seriously. You do an excellent job. Tarken and Daala are still my favorite mini series in this followed by the tour of the death star. Those two you nailed it. If anyone gets snide or nit-picky, just laugh at them and draw up a comic about it. That should give you a good laugh. π Merry Christmas. π
I love BMS!
I Support BMS!
BMS FTW!
‘Nuff said π
From: The Silent Majority!
LMAO!!! Both this strip AND the voting incentive strip have me rolling!! π π π π π π π π π
Love you guys!
You guys are awesome! Wishing you a speedy healing process!
Good luck with the surgery and the recovery! Hopefully you’ll be better in the long run after it.
And I’m glad to hear that BMS will still continue, and I’ll definitely be supporting it. π
