Volunteers in the corner
Even if you’re not familiar with Glen A Larson (the creator of Battlestar Galactica) and his effort to weave in elements of Mormon theology, I still think this is amusing if only for Ackbar’s random teasing.
What I found really fascinating about the poll results is what it tells us about the tastes of Blue Milk Special readership. You guys are evenly split between books and films as your favorite form of Star Wars media. That’s a huge vote from the Expanded Universe novel fans. Reader Arbithian puts it thusly: “I really enjoy the Movies, RPGs, TV series, comics/graphic novels, and the video games; but the books expand everything so much more. You see the universe as so much more than the “Skywalker Saga” And lets face it, there are a lot of authors out there that are better than George Lucas.”
Clone Wars and even Rebels are definitely secondary or tertiary interests behind Video Gaming and Roleplaying. At the very bottom of the pile are comics and graphic novels. That was a little bit of a surprise considering all the pomp and circumstance being made out of the new Marvel Star Wars comics launch. Marvel made 100 variant covers for the first issue, which is just plain silly, but that alone ensured that collectors would push the sales figures for Star Wars relaunch in comics to the number 1 spot for January. I think these stunts are bullshit, personally.
I’m still really surprised that comics are of the least consequence to BMS readers. I’m not sore about it at all. I actually have only a passing interest in Star Wars comics. But, I wonder where you guys think Blue Milk Special the webcomic ranks among your favorite sources of Star Wars material? I’m under no illusions that to a big Star Wars fan, a fan comic like BMS won’t compare, but I know some of you guys have a more casual interest. I’m not sure how to structure such a question for a multi-choice poll. Help me out.
So, you guys love the Star Wars books almost as much as the films (maybe more). Do you like our references to the book universe? Do you want more? Do you want specific characters from the books to start making cameos? Leave a comment with your list of suggested characters and I will put a multi-choice poll together to see which characters have the most interest.
I am actually a practicing Mormon, and I always laughed at Glen Larson injecting the theology into his show. This strip really made me laugh.
I know, right? Nice to see good-natured teasing in one of my favorite webcomics. 😀
YESSSS! Good natured Mormon teasing is better than “OMG, your religion is so blasphemous!” One of my favorite strips, and you guys have done a lot of awesome ones already.
I read “comics” to mean the official paper product type comics and didn’t even consider BMS in the category! Sorry about that. ^_^;;
No no no. I don’t count webcomic in the comic category either. I did mean paper comics. I just wonder what it says about where you guys hold webcomics though. That’s all. 🙂
Hey, volunteering is what Mormons do best! Bravo!
Ackbar is killing me in these comics. Bravo pour le calamari
With just passing familiarity, the Mormon story looks to me like a mix of Moses/Exodus and the gunslinging old west — as winning a mash-up as any. And Battlestar Galactica put all that in space. Glen was a genius.
This is shaping up to be quite the epic finale!
I think that Dark Horse’s endless spamming of Star Wars comics over the years has affected the response towards Star Wars comics. Just look at how Marvel’s new series has reinvigorated the idea of Star Wars comics. (Granted, if the book is terrible, that’ll change in a heartbeat.)
I still say that the best Glen Larson story is the one about James Garner slugging him because Garner became convinced that Larson was stealing scripts from The Rockford Files for use on his own shows.
I never got the Mormon connection before, but I see how it fits now.
Interesting….
Apone!!!
Actually I generally like the comics, but I voted for the books. Both are literature to me and that’s what I collect. Though books have a special place in my heart.
Mormon??? For over 30 years it been regarded as a Jewish parable… When did it become Mormon?

I’m sure there are a lot of religious connotations regardless of the branch of theology. Exactly what theology is probably best argued with the Wikipedia admins.
Totally. As a Mormon I really didn’t see my religion reflected in the series unless you’re counting the Old Testament, which certainly isn’t exclusive to LDS theology. I did see a lot of Jewish themes and Moses metaphors.
Seriously. Ackbar spin-off. 🙂
Huh. I voted comics, because that’s the part of the universe I followed the most. But the constant republishing of often only a few months old comics with a new number has pushed me out of collecting them. So much in fact, that this is the first I ever heard about a new Marvel Star Wars. (Hence voting “What? Where?” on the new poll.)
Might take a look at it though.
I’m Mormon and I don’t get it.
Ooh, you should do a strip about extremist Christian Star Wars haters! creationsciencestudy.wordpress.com/star-wars-and-satans-war/ That’s funny in itself but as a BMS strip that would be hilarious. You gotta work that in.
Nah. I think I’ll pass. We were not poking fun at Mormons in this strip. Though, if you think we were then there is little help for you. 🙂
I think we would all love to see mara jade and thrawn.
I think my star wars love goes to the orignal movies first, then the well done books, then the comics, then all the other books. some plotlines just wouldn’t have enough meat for a book, and do better in comic form. Like Cade and the legacy comics, and the lost tribe of the sith stories (which actually crossed over into books). I like some of the star wars comics more for the trippy artwork than the story too xD
