Will Han Solo leave the Princess?
This is Blue Milk Special, literally anything can happen. Sorry for the delay. Check back later for a proper blog post as soon as I get the time to write it. In the meantime, vote for us on TWC, vote in our poll, and leave a comment. Tell us what you think of Han and Leia’s relationship? Here’s a pic to keep you all interested.
–EDIT–
Can anyone recommend some new Anime? Last good shows we watched were Ghost in the Shell: SAC and Samurai 7. We’ve been out of the anime loop and I’m in the mood for something new. I don’t mind soap and even cutsie anime. Might make a difference from fighting anime. But I’ll take any suggestion seriously and look into it regardless of genre. Thanks!
I really like the cursing in this comic. There’s not much and I admit I’ve to see a few “F***,” a coupla “C***,” and maybe a few “Twats”, or something in there, but it really it just makes me laugh to see the Star Wars Dudes and Dudette curse!
Also, the Falcon looks great!!
Please add more cursing every once in a while. ^_^
You are right. We avoid cursing for the most part. I usually think twice before letting a character curse, although in such a case, I usually allow it because you’re right, it’s funny to hear them say it. The reason I usually think twice is that I don’t want to overuse anything that punctuates a joke for fear of it getting old too quickly. If the characters cursed regularly then it would lose its impact completely. Also, I kind of feel that as long as lesser curse words are used in moderation, they are kind of okay. Stronger curses I just don’t feel belong in Star Wars, even in this parody.
Re: the Falcon. Thanks. Geoffrey Padilla gave me that angle and it worked out. Geoff is a real trooper. 🙂
I agree about the cursing, funny but don’t over use. LOL.
Maybe you can have the Ewoks Curse like sailors. lol
I have plans for the Ewoks. 🙂
Okay, THAT’S got me curious! rofl!
I can’t give anything away. The Ewoks are too far off for me to be giving spoilers now. 🙂 There are various storylines for characters who still have to make official debuts, including Nien Numb, Ackbar, Lando, Mon Mothma, the Imperial Guards, the Ewoks, Yoda, and more!
What – giant moustraps?
I go with Homestar Runner’s creator’s philosophy about cursing. I believe that cursing is not necessary to make a joke funny. In the correct context (as in this episode), it works fine. In Citrus, the guys aren’t sailors, but they’re not afraid to swear periodically. When that happens, I bleep it out. One never really knows who’s reading your comic.
Scott, I did censor for a while, but then I just decided that BMS, overall really was a PG 13 comic. The nature of many of our gags are simply not suitable for young children. Knowing what we are helps to get the most out of it. So, the limited cursing that we use is now shown uncensored. If I censored “shit” in the first panel, then everyone would still know what the intended word was anyway. Might as well just show it. After all, I’m not exactly protecting a kid by censoring that word in in the first panel, and then having a punchline about sex/sleeping together. 🙂
Something tells me we’ve had this discussion before. Unnerving that recall doesn’t kick in until hindsight, assuming that makes any sense.
The Hanger Bay (and Falcon) looks Awesome!
I suppose spooning a Wookie would be better than F***ing one (the fleas would suck either way though). 😉
If they are messing around, at least Luke’s not still in danger of becoming an UncleDaddy. Try graphing that on a family tree. 😉
As for the language I think it’s just F***ing wonderful that you keep the fowl language in only when it’s necessary to make a joke, and not for the shock value of it alone.
Oryou could try the Joe Pesci Saturday Night Live method;
Luke: “Han did you Shampoo Leia last night in the Falcon!”
Han: “Shampoo off! None of your Shampooing business.”
Chewbacca: “* Shampoo, I didn’t get any.” (*Translated from Wookie)
Leia: I can Shampoo whoever I like you Shampooing squirt!”
BTW Beef ROBOTECH rocks!
I still have all the toys and about a dozen vintage models to build.
Yeah I LOVE it as much as Star Wars!! I’ve still got most of my old stuff!
I’m NOT an official person at Robotech.Com, just there enough that I thought maybe I should link the 2.
Rod, I love today’s one. Apart from the laughs – there’s also something nice about this little snapshot of a conversation between Han and Chewie. Dramatically, it works very well. Very touching in fact. A wee window into their lives together.
Chewie is turning out to be the most sage-like of all the characters in the saga – love it 😉
I can just imagine him with a terribly English accent – at least John Cleese’s!
I like Planetes. It’s pretty cool.
There’s a one-season series I like called “Now and Then, Here and There”. It has a really likable main character and a good story.
Depends on what you want.
Creepy- Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Fun- The World God Only Knows
Adventurous- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Anime: I got a kick out of Gurren Lagann, goofey fighting mechs. And it is free on hulu. A little more goofey is Soul Eater, major addiction there!! Also good are Blood, Blade of the Imortal, Darker than Black and for some real fun (not anime) check out Happy Tree Friends!!!!!!
Soul Eater stops being goofy around season 3. The funniest thing after that is the weird “An apple!” thing. From there on, it’s action-y and creepy. Still good though.
Anime Suggestions:
“Black Lagoon” 2 seasons available and 3rd finally green-lit
“Darker Than Black” Think “Push” and “Jumper” meets MiB
“The Slayers” now up to Evolution-R aka Season 5
More evidence that Lucas downplayed what transpired between Leia and Han before ESB. I’m not into Anime much myself, but one of my favorite shows, aside from the aforementioned Robotech saga, is the more recent Death Note. Now THAT’S a treat for the clever mind. Get a bit weird (even for its standards) in places, but overall, a great and mature series.
I reccomend Code Geass, think a cross between death note and gundam. it is a recipe for awesome.
Or if you want a large library to choose from: http://www.animefreak.tv
A good anime?
I personally like Tegami Bachi(letter bee), its a cute fighting anime and I usually watch it off crunchyroll
Gintama is screamingly funny. Death Note is great, as is Sengoku Basara.
Great comic as always!
Anime: personal favourites: Neon Genesis Evangelion (I bet you already know that one)
Death Note
Vision of Escaflowne
Well, there’s always Helsing 🙂 I hear that the manga is better (and much longer), but the anime is still very good and well worth watching.
My favorite is the Space/Adventure/Comedy – “The Irresponsible Captain Tylor”
Trust me, it’s worth the watch. The series is a riot, skip the OVAs.
Great comics guys
and for an Anime, try Trigun.
If you like Star Wars then you’ll like Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It’s a very long anime but a very good one.
I’ve been reading this for about a year now; love the comic, and the interesting ‘slants’ it puts on the well-respected franchise. Anyways, I’ve been a long animé afficionado for going on over 2 decades, and if you’re looking for recommendations, I can always help in that respect.
Mind you, not all these series are “new”, but they are classic.
Anything directed by Ghibli Studios. Period. You can find many of these under Disney now (at last!)
Anything directed by Makoto Shinkai. Pure beauty and deep story telling in a single package. Makes me tear up looking at the imagery and experiencing his wonderful stories over and over again (ok, I’m a sap at times, but who’s telling?)
Windaria the Movie
This one may be a little harder to grab a copy of, but look up the mini series Rumic World, made by the manga-ka and anime artist Rumiko Takahashi (creator of Inu Yasha, Urusei Yatsura, and Ranma 1/2), and in that series, look up the episode Maris the Shojo, or “SuperGal”. The feel of that short OVA has a lot in common with BMS, as it’s also a parody of all that’s Sci-Fi in animé in its day. Its “Outtakes” at the end pretty much started the phenomenon of “cut scenes” for the animé genre, and are a riot to watch.
Hmm, for a good series, There’s only five that I think are really good (though I don’t know what you’re really seeking here) and stand above the rest, IMHO:
One Piece
Hikaru no Go
Hajime no Ippo
Hana Yori Dango (though the manga is 10x better)
Berserk (for the blood-thirsty and brutal side)
Anyways, go to animenfo.com if you want more recommendations. In their top 100 list, you can hardly go wrong. I get my recommendations from there, if that means anything. :2)
Thanks for the info and the link, Danek! Yes, we’re fans of Ghibli Studios. My favorites are Spirited Away and Totoro. We have a fairly wide range of tastes between the two of us. We both have a soft spot for fighting anime like Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, the newer Fist of the North Star films etc. Samurai 7, Ghost in the Shell: SAG 1st and 2nd gigs, Record of Lodoss War (OAV series). I used to watch Patlabor with my brother. I never got into Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop or Trigun. Not saying I wouldn’t try them as people are constantly recommending them to me over the years. However, I have also enjoyed Outlaw Star, the little of Tecnhi Muyo that I have seen. Personally, as much as I am willing to watch another intense anime action/drama series, I kind of have an appetite for some light entertainment as well. If anyone can recommend some humorous / fun anime that doesn’t get too dark or serious, I’d love to know.
Basically, I just want to have fun. Something soapy and/or funny and entertaining. Keep those recommendations coming, however. Whether you want to recommend something light or dark, I’m open. 🙂
check out Gosick while you’re at it. And Mushishi if you are looking for some lovely artistic work. and of course there is Bleach (which i didn’t see mentioned…) i like wandering though animecrazy.net
My wife and I _loved_ Samurai Champloo. It’s directed by the same Shinichiro Watanabe who created Cowboy Bebop. I would recommend both, but you’ve already heard that.
Our favorite could easily be Excel Saga.
We recently watched xxxHolic. I think the “xxx” in the name is more suggestive than reality (and the Japanese only pronounces “Holic”). We also enjoyed Serial Experiment: Lain.
I love it when people get together and share ideas. Great
site, continue the good work!
If you are still looking for anime, my favorite series is “Irresponsible Captain Tylor”. Normally, I only go for subtitled, as it’s usually the most faithful to the actual dialogue. But…. with ICP, the original voice acting is atrocious, and does not let you feel any connection to the characters. (Capt. Tylor sounds like a bad imitation of Jerry Lewis as his most spastic! “Niiice laaaaadyyyyyy”)
More anime recommendations – three years late, but what the heck!
Fruits Basket – wonderful, cute, strangely intense at times.
Read or Die – a one-shot; odd superhero adventure
Samurai Champloo – otherwise traditional samurai tales enhanced with hip-hop music and stylings. Sounds odd… works very well!
Those Who Hunt Elves – very silly sci-fi/fantasy crossover
And of course, as others have mentioned, anything and everything Hayao Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli has ever published. My favorites: Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, Laputa, El Porco Rosso. Enjoy!
Light and laughter,
SongCoyote
I just saw an excellent new anime on Crunchyroll called “Beautiful Bones”, about a brilliant girl who is an apprentice forensic pathologist and amature detective, a ‘young Sherlock’. It is refreshing that the heroic male in her life is not a prospective lover (cliche), but a platonic, possible brother figure (replacement?) character. They don’t just solve crimes, but also non crime mysteries and even archeology, of sorts. It is an excellent show.
