Yoda wants food
Nominations are currently open for Washington Post’s Best Webcomics of 2011: Please consider nominating Blue Milk Special if you think us worthy. Does our Star Wars parody deserve a shot? We’re talking Washington Post! If we get a mention then this’ll be our first official recognition in nearly three years of making webcomics, but we can only do it with your help. You can go to Comic Riffs blog and comment or you can email him directly. See below…
Today, we begin with webcomics. In 2011, such perennials as “xkcd” and the commentary-enhanced “Pibgorn” proved as popular as ever; the history-laced “Hark! A Vagrant” and the graphical charts of “The Oatmeal” gained new fans as well as new books; “Girl Genius” (couresy of MATTHEW INMAN – The Oatmeal) repeated at the Hugo Awards; and the guys at “Penny Arcade” and “PvP” teamed for the new comic “The Trenches.”
So now we turn the stage over to you to ask: What are your nominations for your Favorite Webcomics of 2011? Feel free to e-mail them to comicriffs@washpost.com or share them in the Comments field below.
Based on your nominations, Comic Riffs will cull the finalists and conduct reader polls next month in the various comics categories.
I was expecting you’d depict Yoda more like you did Vader and Leia, with the “could not give a crap” attitude while still retaining the character’s baseline wise-ness, and just twisting that to be more “wise-cracking”. However, so far Yoda has been crass, retiring and overall quite childish. To be honest i’m more than a little disappointed by that because it’s really killing his potential appeal for me.
If we made every character “not give a shit” then I think people would start getting bored. Don’t worry, there’s more to Yoda. Unfortunately, these early scenes just happened to have a few “crass” moments in a row.
Any support, anyone?
Rod, don’t get too worked up–one dingleberry decides to demonstrate their extreme superiority, so what? I personally am very happy with Yoda so far and I doubt that Nader can create as cool a webcomic as this. I don’t mean to be an ass-smoocher here, but I know I don’t appreciate being shot down after lots of hard work and I’m sure you don’t.
it’s okay, everyone has their opinions. we have more in store for yoda, so i hope readers will stick with us.
Fair enough, and I’m glad to hear it. I do hope my opinion didn’t leave you feeling “shot down”. “Just being a dick, I am not” ;p I’ve loved your work so far and honestly I had overlooked how he did a 180 on luke personality-wise in the movie, as fangirl pointed out, so I am keen to see how you develop it in that respect. Keep up the great work!
I like almost every strip. Only a couple have not been very interesting, so keep up the good work. I agree if all the characters where the same it would not be interesting.
You’re right of course Rod. Although… you could eventually have the cliched Hollywood scene in which the villain (Vader) says to the goody (Yoda):
“You and I are not so different as you might think.”
“Hmmm. Do you mean: that neither of us does a shit give?”
How about the fact that Yoda was completely putting on an act for Luke at this stage of the movie? Perhaps this isn’t going to be BMS-Yoda’s permanent character. Or maybe your idea and Rod’s were just different this time; that happens, no need to be rude about it.
The Yoda character seems bloody silly anyway. Especially that play-acting the village idiot stuff.
Having said that; I obviously liked him as a kid, judging by the drawings I lovingly made of him. So, once again I realise that George knew what he was doing back then, and so did I, but now I’m a cynical old fart.
Lol. “cynical old fart”. You just made me snort my drink and I’m not even drinking anything. 😛
Love how Leanne has captured Yoda’s ‘kneeling and foraging’ pose from the film – truly one of the most enduring images from ESB.
Am I the only one who saw Leanne’s ‘kneeling and foraging’ Yoda and imagined this strip ending with some hideously, hideously, inappropriate cheesecake?
No one wants to see that bony ass!
Disturbed, I am!
Everybody keep repeating to yourselves….it’s only a movie….it’s only a movie….followed by, it’s only a webcomic…..it’s only a webcomic….
Breathe in, breathe out. Wax on, wax off.
Rod, don’t change a thing. Not that you would, but you know what I mean.
Resident Hippie OUT. X D
2 decades alone in a swamp has got to make even Yoda a little bonkers.
Good luck with the Post nominations, win or lose, you will remain #1 to this dedicated fan. };)
Yoda really is nuts in this scene in the film. Hard to top that! And thanks, T. Can’t wait to play Dejarik this weekend.
Yeah, he’s definitely rockin’ the crazy hermit vibe, but you certainly can’t blame him.
I second that. Good luck in the poll!
I meant I second what T. Gatto said, but whatevs. I suppose one could say I agree with Karen’s comment as well. Why not?
I understood, but then again I’m nuts, so I don’t count. 😉
I’m glad the creator of the comic can handle suggestions better than the readers…
I think this version of Yoda is better than most parodies.
I wasn’t much beyond my Sesame-Street-every-day days the first time I saw ESB in the theater, and I remember being pulled out of the movie with the Grover voice. I think I knew Frank Oz was doing the voice even back then. The whole routine was very Grover-ish! And my brother liked to do Grover-Yoda impressions. I’ll have to ask him about that…
Lolz; good ol’ (vertically challenged) Yoda 🙂
BMS crass? Does anyone remember the Taun Taun and the probe droid?
Um after that strip, anything can happen in this universe. And I love that about BMS!
I just wonder what strange things yoda will be putting Luke through in the comming weeks!
BTW the art for Kahn FRAK-n-Awesome!
omgnewincentivestrip!!! omgomgomgomg!!
I don’t want to spoil it for anyone else, but yaaaaaaay!!! X D
Leanne outdid herself on the drawing! That little twist was inspired! Totally didn’t see it coming!
Thanks. I kept laughing while I worked on it! Had a great feeling about it.
Just saw the new votey! Great stuff.
Definitely some Pros and Kahn’s to the incentive strip! 😉
Hey guys, I live in a cave and can’t seem to recognize the guy that ol’ empal’s* talking to. Is he a khan? Possibly Genghis? Wait no, that can’t be right. CONTEXT CLUES, WHY HAVE YOU FAILED ME?!?!?!? 🙁
