A fate worse than death
We’re not just throwing classic Battlestar Galactica into Blue Milk Special for the hell of it. Aside from being produced in the same era as early Star Wars, many of the production’s special effects team, led by Jon Dykstra, were loaned from LucasFilm. Most importantly to the feel of the show, and the reason it has some of the same aesthetics, is production artist Ralph MacQuarrie. Some of his designs can be found here at Galactica.tv. His work, just as with Star Wars, is absolutely stunning and inspirational.
I always thought Captain Apollo (dark hair in our strip) and Starbuck (light hair) drew something from Luke and Han Solo, albeit with switched hair colors. Incidentally, Richard Hatch (Captain Apollo) is a left hander like myself and Leanne. Yay! Here’s the opening sequence to the classic 1978 show. Note: I’m not really a fan of the show itself, more the asthetics and the actors involved.
“Star Wars and Galactica are superficially similar because they (not coincidentally) share two key crew members: Ralph McQuarrie (who visually designed the spaceships, locations and some characters for both productions) and John Dykstra (who invented the system for animating spaceship models used by both productions). 20th Century Fox sued Universal Studios for copyright infringement, citing 34 similarities between the two films. Universal counter-sued, alleging that R2-D2 was plagiarized from the drones in Silent Running. Courts eventually ruled that Galactica was sufficiently different that it didn’t legally infringe on Star Wars.” – Star Wars Origins at MoonGadget.com
We will be back on Monday with one of my favorite strips so far. I’ll also have some new auctions, including the new BMS buttons, Leanne’s Artbooks and Sketchbooks and prints for sale. Lots of new ways you can support us!
The sacrifices that are made in a time of war. Strangely appropriate for ANZAC Day.
Seriously though … Lest We Forget.
Those that came before, so we shouldn’t have to walk their path.
So say we all!
So say we all!
Also designed those awesome fighters in Buck Rogers!?
The only good bit of it, well apart from Wilma..
Those collars almost make it seem like Starbuck and Apollo are wearing slave girl ‘suits’ – which only makes the image that much more funny.
Excellent stuff 🙂
This comment isn’t really apropos of this strip, but clicking around Blue Milk Special I reread the Splinter of the Mind’s Eye arc and it mage me wonder why you never mentioned Brian Daley’s Han Solo trilogy.
It was set BEFORE A New Hope, which is why we never touched it. Otherwise I would have given it a nod.
I too am left handed. I like Luke’s expression, like, “heh, good one, Han.”
I’m sure Apollo and Starbuck are all set with their escape plan. Aaaany time now…
Looking forward to Monday’s strip!
Funny, I was so loyal to Star Wars as a 9, 10 year old, I perceived rip-offs everywhere and really resented it. I hated BSG for precisely that reason, but grudgingly watched it because it was the closest thing, apart from Battle of the Planets TO Star Wars. Every week you got the exact same, brilliant space dog-fights. I’m sure this appeal wasn’t lost on its creators!
Arg, and I was wondering yesterday why Starbuck looked so different …
Many thanks for the great work! I’m nearly thru after 5 days.
That is, I even watched the old BSG back then – ok, around 1990 in Germany, same time as Buck Rogers and ST TNG.
